When I was ten, I studied the blade in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty, I kill people in the street with impunity. When I became a man I put away childish things, including my regard for human life. - C. S. Lewis

I can't really consider myself a grown-up just yet. Every once in a while I still fantasize about pulling off a perfect iaijutsu draw and cleaving someone in half with a katana, the most juvenile of fantasies.

I just listened to their music and I have to say, no, I don't think you would enjoy Megadeth. But they're a fine band nonetheless.

Colony Laser @gryps2.bsky.social · 06/10/2026

On my way back from the Megadeth concert my Lyft driver and I got talking about music and he asked if he thought I would enjoy Megadeth's music. I asked what bands he was into and he said Arctic Monkeys, a band I was not familiar with.

I like that you kept some of the toy's features on Megatron, specifically the pistol grip plates on his shins. Little details like that really emphasize that he is a transformer!

I liked Godzilla Minus One a lot. Kenji Noda was my favorite character. Drawing real people is hard.

Every time Godzilla tries to use his nuclear breath, Atheism-zilla is like, "Mm, no, I'm sorry, it just doesn't seem plausible," and suddenly it doesn't work

A "foid" is an incel term for a woman. I doubt some of the people who are making art are aware of that but it does make me suspect that this trend has some pretty dire origins

010

Colony Laser @gryps2.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

People are making fan art of a female Draco Malfoy under the title "Malfoid".

100

Colony Laser @gryps2.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

What on earth is this "Malfoid" nonsense, spreading both the virulent HP fandom and also incel terminology at the same time? If you want a female Draco Malfoy type, there already is one that is much better than the original.

The gender composition isn't as important as making the triangle feel tense, like there's no good answers. Also there should be strong relationships between all three characters and not just two to a central character. That said I think one guy and two girls is the cheapest and easiest to mess up.

Several weeks ago, Phil Tippett's legendary animation studio in Berkeley, CA closed. An anonymous hero noticed a folder of CDs. This turned out to be hundreds of unseen hi-res images and videos from Star Wars, Robocop, Jurassic Park, etc. ~90 isos for you to browse: archive.org/details/tipp...

A casual Star Wars alien fella at the cantina, in a sun faded, reddish photo. Someone will be mad at me for not knowing who this is.

Phil, a balding Caucasian man, poses a model of the garthok, an antagonist from the Coneheads movie.

Phil, a balding caucasian man, points at some CG on a CRT computer monitor, as a younger man looks on. The screen shows a model of a dinosaur attacking a jeep, while there's an actual physical model of that event in the foreground for reference.

an isolated shot of a star wars vehicle. Sorry, I don't know star wars lol

Chiang's book is haunting and will stay with me for a long time, particularly in light of what ended up happening to her. I won't get into the details but what happened in Nanking is pretty unique for the 20th century in how up close and personal the atrocities were

Colony Laser @gryps2.bsky.social · 30/09/2026

I've discussed Moderan a bunch already. The Fire Next Time is a good read, it's interesting to see what Baldwin got right and wrong in the decades since its writing. He was a man with a uniquely penetrating view on race relations in the United States and is well worth your time.

Absolutely not keeping up with my resolution to read one book a month this year but I have read a few: Frankenstein by Mary Shelley Moderan by David Bunch The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin The Rape of Nanking by Iris Chiang
