A fuckup that requires the NYTs to report more accurately. Now we can work on the relationship between fuckup degree and accuracy. Is it one to one? Probably more like 5 to one, at least. We can develop an algorithm.

The Onion: CDC Successfully Eradicates Children, Leading Vector of Disease
Hailing its success as a major victory for the public health and safety of all Americans, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Monday that it had successfully eradicated children. The agency confirmed that children had been the leading vector of disease nationally, posing grave risks to entire communities and contributing significantly to the rapid spread of deadly germs. CDC officials told reporters the complete elimination of the prevalent disease-carriers would cause a massive decrease in child-borne pathogens nationwide, particularly benefiting those vulnerable individuals who faced the most exposure to children, including parents, daycare workers, teachers, coaches, and ice cream truck drivers. “Humanity has never faced a more deadly carrier of disease and bacteria than children, and their total removal is a massive medical breakthrough and a milestone in the management of illness in this country,” CDC spokesperson Jane Christiansen said of the watershed achievement, a humanitarian project first...

The important thing is not that other countries will skim (though they will take the best, and China can take a lot). It’s that our pipeline will be broken, we will no longer be a destination or a place to build a career. In 10 yrs, this will be noticeable. Plus we will have no infrastructure.

FDA has the authority to withdraw approval, if they decide safety is an issue. They can also narrow the indication, or black box it to death. RFK is a lawyer, he may understand drug law, if a knowledgeable person walks him through it. This is theoretical, I don’t think this will happen.

grumpyoldscientist.bsky.social @grumpyoldscientist.bsky.social · 14/08/2026
One can hope. I can see RFK jr cooking up some bogus reason to modify or withdraw the approval. The commish of FDA has a lot of reg override power.

Mostly from Merck. Jesse Goodman, the only person named who has direct reg experience, doesn’t state a time frame. But as I said, even if it can be done in 5, it’s a stupid idea.
141
grumpyoldscientist.bsky.social @grumpyoldscientist.bsky.social · 14/08/2026
Personally, I think it can be done in less. I worked for the FDA. But it’s a stupid idea, and Merck certainly would have no interest in doing it. And it’s not like there is a ton of spare biologics manufacturing capacity laying around.
110
grumpyoldscientist.bsky.social @grumpyoldscientist.bsky.social · 14/08/2026
10 yrs may be an overestimate for regulatory review . But 5 probably isn’t. All assuming established manufacturing can be deconstructed and formulation doesn’t need to change dramatically. And how vaccines are given in relation to each other can influence how they work, so that changes too.
100
grumpyoldscientist.bsky.social @grumpyoldscientist.bsky.social · 14/08/2026
I am sure RFK understands that, even if Trump doesn’t. And to approve them separately will not be an overnight procedure. So vaccine gaps will arise.
