Moby the giant marrow weighed in at 107.3lbs/48.7kg in the guess the weight competition at Kingfisher Farmshop yesterday. The winner picked up £50 to spend in-store. £195 raised for Royal Marsden. Moby lost a bit of weight over 4 weeks but is still 27lbs heavier than the 2026 winner at Harrogate 😉

I've got two lads (year 9 & year 11) starting here on sunday to help me with the garden & allotment. An allotment is hard work, add a garden, and it's impossible to maintain both. I've decided to employ some keen youngsters to pass on some growing skills. #GardenersWorld

It's good that baby sweetcorn can be homegrown and save on airmiles from India. It's also good that it's harvested before pollination so it can be planted in a single row that Mr Badger has no interest in... but my goodness, you don't get much from all the effort 😂 #allotment #snobaby

Another day spent fixing slightly dropped terrace paving, had to adjust the sleepers and add 3 bags of sand, plus attach some decking wood to the sleepers. It needed doing to accommodate MrsGrow's new egg chair birthday present. I am somewhat tired 😴😂

Busy day levelling up the front garden seating area, has needed an extra row of sleepers for a few years. Screens going up next, been stored in the shed for 3 years, chemotherapy held that job up.

I know I'm getting old... but people do love Long Meadow as the heart of the show. GW is not just a horticultural programme, it's a feel good 'take me to the host's garden paradise at the end of the week' experience. When you strip that out, it loses character. #gardenersworld

Last week, we had a mad frog calling out for 3 nights on the trot. This week, frog spawn! As females don't generally call out, does this mean our male got lucky? Hope so. 8 years that pond has delivered nothing but dragonflies - which is nice, but FROGS!

Spot of reading about horse worming medicines today. Always known that aminopyralid weedkiller can go through a horse into manure and harm allotment crops but never thought of the worming meds doing harm to earthworms... and they do 😬

I watched Zero Dark Thirty last night, the story of the capture and killing of Bin Laden. That involved an illegal special forces raid into Pakistan to get the world's most infamous terrorist. That feels very different to jumping over a border to kidnap a foreign head of state.

Whatever you might think of Maduro, the seizure and kidnapping of a head of state takes us to a very dark place. Vast, arbitrary, extra-legal power, which could be exercised almost anywhere, regardless of the character of the target government.

For the best chance of success, try planting "in-the-green" snowdrops. These have leaves, (and occasionally old flowers), and are still active when you plant them. If you plant them as soon as you get them, they are more likely to succeed than dormant bulbs, which often dry out/die in store.

Went for a very short walk. Spotted a snowdrop in the front garden. I've been putting a few in the ground every year for 3 years but to no avail. The year I don't bother, some old bulb decides to wake up 😂

This'll probably sound nuts, but one of the main things to get me through chemotherapy each week in 2024, and again in 2025, has been Saturday night Strictly. It's so uplifting and really nice to see the cast support each other. A real tonic for the soul. #StrictlyComeDancing

Feeling much better today (day +9). My stem cells have started to engraft and my white blood cells and neutrophils (immune system) have picked up. BMT Consultant says he'll probably kick me out on Monday or Tuesday. So it's much more likely now that I will be home for Christmas 🥳
