Uh oh, did someone’s website and personal account experience a big drop in activity after Ukraine hit a Russian data center?

And he can't do a Schmidt either where he might get away with being not all that folksy. Though Schmidt had that also in his repertoire, Merz feels like entitled small-town upper class. Excellent characterizations of Günther, would say Wüst, too, versus Merz. Recognizable also further South.

He can probably tap into the devalued Soviet interpretation where it is more like "the self-evident enemy" than the ideology. So much better for propaganda. Still agree that it feels tonedeaf without such a context elsewhere: "We are fighting Nazism like Nazis and together with actual Nazis".

Where you can pose as the true and only anti-Fascists while copying Nazis, cooperating with them as seems opportune, even help them along, etc.

Enemy is whoever is in the way or attacking Soviet power (or Russian power in its nationalistic continuation). Materially it is different because that's the good side. And why not learn a few tricks from the other side like Stalin in his Nazi-curious phase. Yields this void anti-Fascism.

groundloop.bsky.social @groundloop.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
I'd think it is that "Nazi" is just used as "enemy du jour, evil, has to be fought by all means", no content otherwise. From a Marxist-Leninist viewpoint that Putin comes from, it even makes some sense: the material basis is always the same, ideological superstructures don't matter..

I am more lenient on the Stegners or Mützenichs. In my view, it is honestly deluded, but would never think they are Kremlin stooges. Would even think that it is a viewpoint that should be in the debate (but refuted, too). Unsure what it is with the respective Linke politicians.

groundloop.bsky.social @groundloop.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
How does Linke explain to itself they were so long in the same party and that seemed natural? It is like: Now that our bassplayer has left and started his own band, we suddenly discover he was always playing Wagner tuba.

BSW was pretty much the Russia caucus of the party, but not all of it. Some still there? Party line has improved I would say, like being able to call it a Russian attack on Ukraine against international law. Only my perhaps selective impression.

Thought she would have the decency to fade into obscurity. But no, must be the curse of the German ex-Chancellor where they have to annoy everybody and make you glad they are no longer in office. Goes with the job, already Bismarck did that.

This must have been a huge mixing zone. Rudolf Vichow did a survey in the 19th century about hair and eye colors throughout Germany. Basically he found a smooth gradient from fairer to darker types North to South. The vast majority were not blond and blue-eyed. US racists never got the memo.

Or someone gave up on everybody misspelling or mispronouncing their name. Maybe that's also why Kubicki goes with a reading as is in German. Had a Kurdish colleague who did that, too, because her last name was practically a trap for Germans with 'c', 'ç' and 'ş' all in one effectively Turkish name.
000
groundloop.bsky.social @groundloop.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
My impression is that such spellings mean a name has been around for a long time. Maybe when literacy was lower and orthography less standardized. Some official just writing the name as it sounded in German. Like there are also crossover spellings such as Kubitzki or Kubitzky.

Actually funny how long-established surnames show how Germany was never that homogeneous. Lots of names from Dutch, French, Italian, the whole range of Slavic languages, sometimes even farther away. Again, more so for France that was a major destination for emigration already in the 19th century.
100
groundloop.bsky.social @groundloop.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
Slavic surnames were pretty common already before major immigration. May get it wrong, but I think I once saw a figure like 15%. Can often go back centuries and are perhaps not perceived as a connection. For example, Wolfgang Kubicki (FDP) would even mispronounce his obviously Polish surname.

Perhaps viable for them to draw the dividing line at Islam in general (as with PVV, though, the Maroccan obsession seems like they realize this it too broad).

groundloop.bsky.social @groundloop.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
Actually, same and even more advanced in France. There were actual riots against Italian immigrants in the 19th century. I mean, where does Bardella have his surname from (without checking on Wikipedia)?
110
groundloop.bsky.social @groundloop.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
Still think the point is correct and maybe mine is more limited when I think of how Germans have embraced, for example, Italian immigrants over the decades while they were the most despised early on.

groundloop.bsky.social @groundloop.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
Not many examples where such parties in Europe have been able to make the move. PVV or even AfD have their outreach projects. You might build them around "we only hate that specific group", eg. Maroccans in the NL (not in Germany where they are not in the focus).

groundloop.bsky.social @groundloop.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
Difficult with mythical ethno-nationalism as the guiding principle. In the US, you can always recruit new nativists by embracing a despised group as honorary Anglo-Saxons: Germans, Irish, Jews, Southern and Eastern Europeans, even sometimes Blacks or selectively Hispanics, eg. Cubans.
