The Historical Society of the Episcopal Church invites chapter proposals for Vol. 2 of a 5-volume History of Anglicanism in the Americas. Especially seeking: early evangelicalism, TEC church parties, mission & frontier colonialism, development of TEC in regions.

I’m not perfect at avoiding writing procrastination, but one thing that helped me was falling in love with revision. Getting a first draft done early puts me in a place where so many things seem possible. Often, I’m not even fully aware of what my thoughts *are* until a draft is complete.

That and his Kyrie! G flats AND F sharps? C'mon, bud. (Now: the Matthias Gloria is one of my very faves--one parish I was at uses it seasonally every Eastertide, with the annual debut on Easter Vigil, and I think it rocks).

Hmm! Why sacramental rites (including Eucharist) and ordinal—and even a catechism that refers to itself as a “point of departure”—but not the Office? Interesting that it got worded this way.

And there's a Benedictus antiphon on "Cum turba plurima" as well (Cantus index 002040). Lots of options. For the sake of time, I'll print out this lovely Sexagesima weekday antiphon from the Salisbury Antiphoner, p. 30, to fold into my hymnal and sing with the Magnificat when I can steal a moment. 🕯️
Antiphon "Quod autem cecidit," on Luke 8:15, in square notation.

Randy's Mag Antiphon project, Proper 10 Year A. Matthew 13:1-9,18-23 features the Parable of the Sower, the old Sexagesima gospel from Luke 8. Liber Usualis includes antiphons from Luke 8 in the Sexagesima little hours; the Salisbury Antiphoner does so for 2nd Evensong and two weekday antiphons.

But there’s a pair of Lauds psalm antiphons with significant manuscript attestation, on Mt 11:29 and 30, for Common of Apostles and other occasions, either of which would make great Magnificat antiphons for Proper 9, Year A: “Tollite jugum meum super vos”… cantusdatabase.org/chant/233033

I haven’t found an extant chant antiphon from Matthew 10:40-42 (Proper 8, Year A). But for Proper 9, the “yoke is easy” reading, there are options. The Liber Usualis’s Alleluia verse on Mt 11:29 for Sacred Heart (p. 972) is, as such, a bit too melismatic to work as an antiphon verse.

One of the formative priests in my life (who I'll name if anyone asks), after any kind of personal conversation about anything at all, especially hard things, ALWAYS offers to end the conversation with extempore prayer. Sanctifies the whole interaction. Now I notice when priests *don't* do it.

I am starved for it. I have this dream of coordinating a Sunday School class of rotating speakers who basically just continually catechize adult laypeople. I call it "The Perpetual Confirmand." We'd read and reread Olsen's Inwardly Digest, that great Gunn/Shobe book, stuff like that.

If I were going to pair an antiphon from the Proper 7 Gospel (Matthew 10:24-39) with this week's Magnificat, it would be this one on Mt 10:28, "Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul, says the Lord." Not seeing it in the usual sources. 🕯️ cantusdatabase.org/chant/233029

I was a UMC PK, too, in the South Carolina Conference, and definitely get this. Then I came of age and moved to Texas, maybe the one state worse than SC (if not sillier) about “Hey, we’re from here and that’s more amazing than you outsiders can know—and check out this state flag”

I was raised United Methodist, and this impatience resonates with me. As a young adult, it really surprised me that most of the intelligent, outspoken atheists in my circle of acquaintances were apparently unaware of any Christianity beyond fundamentalism.

See also Liber Usualis 1077 and 1108, respectively from Vespers and Lauds for 23rd Sunday after Pentecost. Salisbury's antiphon isn't quite an adaptation of the LU Mag antiphon, and if I weren't so busy, I might rather transcribe it here with NRSVUE underlay as a better option than Salisbury. 🕯️

For a Magnificat antiphons that matches the Gospel for Proper 5, Year A (Matthew 9:9-13, 18-26), an easy option is Salisbury Antiphoner, Mag. ant., for 24th Sunday after Trinity.

This is a great idea. Within a few weeks I should have time to make a presentable chart of all the RCL Sundays for which I have and haven't found Magnificat or other Gospel antiphons in English or Latin. I started this project in earnest last year and have already been stumped several times.

...ordinary antiphons for ordinary time, which he defends well (I think) in the preface. I like the idea of a list--for me the easier part has been finding existing chants that correspond with RCL, so I might try to wrap up that part of the project sooner.

This is all helpful, thank you. There's also a serious limit to how useful my endeavor is to anyone: even for those who desire to chant TEC Daily Office corporately or alone (which is a small subset of the laity that prays Daily Office at all), Howard Galley's Prayer Book Office set a precedent of

For Trinity Sunday and week, Year A, I've found this Mag antiphon in the Salisbury Antiphoner for Friday of Easter Week--an anglicization of "Data es mihi" from LU--which bears a verse from Sunday's Matthew reading. It'll do just fine for Evening Prayer next week.
A chant in square notation appointed for the Friday of Easter Week, with the text "All power is given unto me, in heaven and in earth, alleluya" and the vowels of the doxology. It's in Mode 8.1. The source is the Salisbury Antiphoner, p. 50.

Both. When I find a good Latin source--and when I have time--I make a transcription that replaces the Vulgate text with NRSVUE language. Sometimes that works badly, but often the words line up quite nicely.

but of course those only cover a one-year lectionary. I've found other antiphons through Cantus Index (cantusindex.org), which points to many Medieval chants that didn't make the "canon" but were widely used at one point or another. And when I've come up short, I've composed new ones.

Getting back into the Magnificat antiphon saddle. My current long-term goal is to have a chant antiphon from the Sunday Gospel reading for each Sunday in RCL, to pair with the Magnificat during evening prayer throughout each week. The Salisbury Antiphoner and Liber Usualis have some good choices, 🕯️

I’m not sure how well I completed this—I didn’t recognize most of the books and wondered if this might be mainly for clergy or seminarians—but I’m wondering if I might really be… a Neo-Evangelical? (Henry, Packer, and Grudem came out on top for me.)

Maybe so! On one hand, I hope to be changed and perfected (or claim to), but on the other, I really seem to struggle with surrender. It’s way easier for me to wear red (or look at prayer books and hymnals) than to brave the small talk of coffee hour, to listen to people and let them in.

To some extent, inscrutability seems to be an intended theme in this text—the angel seems to be toying with Zechariah about the meaning of this bizarre, surreal vision. Also, NRSVUE uses “plummet” for plumb line—not a term I’ve ever heard anyone use.

Getting heat from sticking to the lectionary seems like a good kind of heat. It’s just as problematic to me that Christians come away from Gospel readings all too often finding them easy.
