Randy's Mag Antiphon project, Proper 10 Year A. Matthew 13:1-9,18-23 features the Parable of the Sower, the old Sexagesima gospel from Luke 8. Liber Usualis includes antiphons from Luke 8 in the Sexagesima little hours; the Salisbury Antiphoner does so for 2nd Evensong and two weekday antiphons.

I haven’t found an extant chant antiphon from Matthew 10:40-42 (Proper 8, Year A). But for Proper 9, the “yoke is easy” reading, there are options. The Liber Usualis’s Alleluia verse on Mt 11:29 for Sacred Heart (p. 972) is, as such, a bit too melismatic to work as an antiphon verse.

If I were going to pair an antiphon from the Proper 7 Gospel (Matthew 10:24-39) with this week's Magnificat, it would be this one on Mt 10:28, "Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul, says the Lord." Not seeing it in the usual sources. 🕯️ cantusdatabase.org/chant/233029

For a Magnificat antiphons that matches the Gospel for Proper 5, Year A (Matthew 9:9-13, 18-26), an easy option is Salisbury Antiphoner, Mag. ant., for 24th Sunday after Trinity.

Getting back into the Magnificat antiphon saddle. My current long-term goal is to have a chant antiphon from the Sunday Gospel reading for each Sunday in RCL, to pair with the Magnificat during evening prayer throughout each week. The Salisbury Antiphoner and Liber Usualis have some good choices, 🕯️

The best existing antiphon for the RCL Lent 5A Gospel (the Raising of Lazarus) is "I am the resurrection (Ego sum resurrectio)," a Liber Usualis chant appointed to the burial service and at Lauds in the Office for the Dead, sung with the Song of Zechariah. Not seeing an English version yet. 🕯️
Lauds antiphon on "I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die," John 11:25-26, in mode 2, from Liber Usualis p. 1804.

This chant in the Salisbury Antiphoner--the Magnificat antiphon appointed for Wednesday of Lent 4--works well as a daily evensong antiphon for the Week of Lent 4 in RCL Year A, as it comes straight from Sunday's John 9 reading. ⚓️
Magnificat antiphon in Mode 3, on the text from John 9: "A man that is called Jesus made clay out of spittle: and anointed mine eyes, and now I see."

The Samaritan woman at the well is the Lent 3, Year A Gospel reading—there are a few Medieval antiphons that set this passage in John. One, "Veri adoratores," is the Friday antiphon for Lent 3 in the Salisbury Antiphoner (pictured), and I'll be using that one throughout the week... (1/2) ⚓

Since we'll hear John 3:1-17 in this Sunday's Eucharist (Lent 2 Year A), I'll use this Magnificat antiphon, a traditional one for Pentecost Monday, for the week's Evening Prayer. The one in Salisbury Antiphon works fine for Lent 2--just beware of the clef change and unseasonal Alleluia. 🕯️
Magnificat antiphon "Non enim misit," in Salisbury Antiphoner for Monday after Whitsunday, setting John 3:17: "For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world: but that the world through him might be saved, alleluya."

The Prime antiphon for the First Sunday of Lent (Liber Usualis pp. 530-531) is based on Matthew 4:1-2, which Revised Common Lectionary followers hear in church that Sunday in Year A. This will be my Magnificat antiphon for the week. (Sorry for the Latin--no time to engrave the English this week.)🕯️
Square note Prime antiphon for Lent 1 in Liber Usualis, pp. 530-31; chant is in mode 1. Mostly syllabic setting; no flowery melismas in this one. A good antiphon for fasting times. Text: "Jesus autem cum jejunasset quadraginta diebus et quadraginta noctibus postea esuriit."

The Salisbury Antiphoner's Mag antiphon for 2nd evensong, Feast of the Transfiguration, works okay for Epiphany Last. I'll use it tonight through Tuesday. I'm more enthusiastic about Thesaurizate vobis, which this antiphoner uses for Ash Wednesday. Trying to channel my energy toward Lent prep. 🕯
Salisbury Antiphoner, magnificat antiphon for Feast of the Transfiguraiton, 2nd evensong, mode 7.1, in square note notation. Lyrics: "The three disciples beheld his glory, the glory as of the only-begotten of the Father: being eyewitnesses of his majesty."

For next week (Epiphany 5, Year A), I wanted an antiphon on Matthew 5:13-20 for Magnificat in evening prayer, but there's nothing like that in the Salisbury Antiphoner, Liber Usualis, etc. 📕 This antiphon, which shows up in Einsiedeln 611 and numerous other manuscripts for Common of Apostles (1/3)

At one extreme is my project, to provide Magnificat antiphons for Ordinary Time, based on the specific Gospel readings appointed each week by the lectionary. Totally opposite is Howard Galley's approach in The Prayer Book Office: just four generic antiphons for use in every week of green season. 🕯️

In his _Prayer Book Office_ (1980), Howard Galley intentionally makes green seasons extra green, not only with generic "anytime" antiphons for psalms and canticles but even by skipping the weekly collect on weekdays. Is there something to be said for this? From his introduction:🕯️
"After the Lord's Prayer and suffrages, the office continues with the collect. In the new Prayer Book the Collect of the Day is optional. This represents a return to the more ancient practice when the collect of the office normally referred to the time of day or the day of the week. In this book the use of the Collect of the Day is recommended on Saturday evenings and Sundays, feast days and their eves, and daily in the seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter. During the 'green seasons' the collect of the day of the week is suggested as the principal collect of the office."
