My “repair” work. This is now holding a tubeless tire in place and I rode it to work this morning, but I’ll probably swap to a backup wheel set tonight.

More tales from the dungeon workshop: I was very excited to wrap my bars with this extremely orange tape (Fizik Vento Microtex Tacky). It is with deep regret that I must report that it appears to suck shit.

They even have the nerve to claim 5 foot wide bike lanes would make cyclists safer because it would make them less tempted to speed (something which we’ve previously seen isn’t a concern for motorists, presumably because of their better moral character?)
5 ft wide bike lanes are entirely sufficient when they have buffers. That is the width of bike lanes, with 2 ft buffer lanes, on
Beacon St. in Brookline (a photo of that is pasted farther down, in Section #5 of this letter). There is no reason why things
should be any different on Beacon St. at the Reservoir. One can logically argue that 5 ft wide, buffered bike lanes are safer
than wider bike lanes because they prevent cyclists from having a false sense of security that leads to speeding. Section
from 2450 Beacon St. to Chestnut Hill Ave. (as proposed by BTD on May 6, 2026)

An uncongested auto lane is a “cherished feature,” that certainly couldn’t tempt drivers into bad behavior, oh no. An uncongested bike lane, though, is “mostly empty.” And might tempt ne’er-do-wells into dangerous behavior like *checks notes* riding side-by-side.
The long, largely uninterrupted stretch between Chestnut Hill Ave. and the Newton border currently provides rare and
appreciated traffic flow efficiency, which the neighborhood feels is not a problem to be corrected, but rather a cherished
feature. It is conducive to stress-free driving along a beautiful, scenic route, which in our observation has made this road one of the safest, if not the safest arterial road in Allston-Brighton.On the other hand, we have all seen at one time or another instances of speeding on narrower roads that at that moment
happened to be empty enough to allow it. Therefore, we believe that it is not the presence of reasonably wider traffic lanes
that encourages speeding, but rather the available empty road ahead that may tempt some drivers to speed.
Since bike lanes are empty most of the time, there are bike lane users (on e-bikes, mopeds and scooters, in addition to
regular bikes) who choose to go much too fast when they can, and by doing so, endanger pedestrians and themselves -- but
BTD is not proposing to punish responsible cyclists by narrowing bike lanes to dissuade other bike lane users from speeding.
This tactic is only reserved for drivers.

Wondering if anyone in my bike circle could use or knows someone who could use a good commuter bike or a good cyclocross bike? I’ve got a couple: 1x12 disc style (Trek Crockett), 1x1 rim style (Gitane City Link). Both size 52 cm.
A 52 cm Trek Crockett in the Cobra Blood colorway with GRX 800 brakes and shifting. It has fenders and looks very handsome indeed.A 52 cm Gitane City Link singlespeed cyclocross bike set up for commuters. It has a cream and white color scheme and has a flat bar, front rack, fenders, and blue anodized flat pedals.

At about the same time, I swapped my Swiss Cross, which already had a flat bar, to a longer stem with more drop and it turned a somewhat awkward and twitchy winter train station into a gloriously stable yet responsive cruiser commuter.

I’m not really exaggerating about the Best Cat thing. Climbing into a lap and settling down for a cozy afternoon/evening was just…Tuesday for this guy. Plus every other day of the week. How many cats are that into human contact!? Plus happy to make friends with anyone. It sucks to lose that.

On that note, actually, both of our cats are rescues. The one I’m calling dumb was abandoned at a state park in Tennessee as a kitten and grew up into the sweetest, handsomest, most cuddly doofus ever seen. The dirt bags who dropped him missed out.

Blizzard was somehow both not as bad as I expected and also worse, in that the digging out was actually pretty intense in a way that our previous big storm this season really wasn’t.

Crossbow question, for good measure. It’s like “Ah, but accessibility!” But disabled hunters are already allowed to use crossbows and if you want something more powerful and easier to use than a compound, there’s 2 weeks of shotgun season already!

I’m honestly open to law changes if there’s evidence they won’t negatively impact public safety. The way these questions implied Mass is an out-of-touch outlier pissed me off, though, and I let them have it.

The map that’s going around lately. First round. Honestly if I were actually in the sort of position I was in in my 20’s, where moving for opportunities and such is easier, I’d probably be more open-minded about a lot of the orange and even red sections here. I did live in Tennessee.

Celebrated my 40th birthday by getting a group of friends together to spend the weekend together and ride the 6 Gaps route in the Green Mountains of Vermont: 130 miles and 12,000 feet of climbing. A route I’d wanted to complete after doing 4 of the 6 gaps 7 years previously.

“As things turned out, they stayed five days and brought no one.”
When the slave catchers arrived in Boston on October 25, 1850, they vowed to get the Crafts “if [we] have to stay here to all eternity, and if there are not men enough in Massachusetts to take them, [we] will bring them some from the South.” As things turned out, they stayed five days and brought no one. Parker hid Ellen Craft in his house, where he kept a loaded revolver on his desk. William went to ground in the house of a black abolitionist who kept two kegs of gunpowder on his front porch and a veritable arsenal in the kitchen. Members of the vigilance committee put up posters around town describing the “man-stealers,” harassed them in the streets, and warned them on October 30 that their safety could not be assured if they remained any longer. They left on the afternoon train.

A little bit of inspiration to take from 1850’s Boston. From Battle Cry of Freedom by James McPherson.
A skilled cabinetmaker, William Craft found work in Boston. He and his wife joined the church of Theodore Parker, head of the local vigilance committee, whose congregation included several other fugitive slaves. The publicity surrounding the Crafts naturally attracted their owner’s attention. As soon as the fugitive slave bill became law he sent two agents to recapture them. This was like throwing a rubber ball against a brick wall. Boston was the communications center of abolitionism. Under the “higher law” doctrine, blacks and whites there had vowed to resist the fugitive slave law. “We must trample this law under our feet,” said Wendell Phillips. It “is to be denounced, resisted, disobeyed,” declared the local antislavery society. “As moral and religious men, [we] cannot obey an immoral and irreligious statute.”

To be fair, they didn’t overcook it TOO much. I’m screenshotting the two relevant paragraphs here. But it’s worth noting that the context is De Crescenzo noting that the UCI Worlds course doesn’t suit her or most other LTGP pros, which is straightforwardly true.
