There are some settings you can change that can reduce the clutter. Turning on code editor 2 and turning off quick access, both in preferences. If you can explain what feels cluttered I could maybe offer more suggestions, but also the engine isn't for everyone, so it may just not click

The feeling I had when I flashed a GB Studio jam game I made and then played on my childhood Gameboy was incredible. I second this, would be real cool.

Fortunally this is mostly BS PR investor speak and doesn't actually touch the engine, and requires users to integrate themselves if they want to use it, but there is definitely space for any engine to take a stance and get an easy win.

Grog @grogdev.bsky.social · 22/06/2026
From what I've seen they have no actual plans to integrate AI into GameMaker the engine itself

How does this work in GMS1? I can't even really picture it

Ah yeah you're right, the grid size is locked for tile sets, but you can make your own brushes that are the combination of multiple tiles

You should be able to change that setting no problem, i can take a look at it tomorrow

I'm leaning concerned, I did only a few updates and I'm pretty sure the yy files change to reflect the version, but if it works it works ig

There's nothing to revert, no AI features are being added to GameMaker. The article people are getting upset about greatly over exaggerated. Users can use the new CLI to implement AI if they choose, that's basically it.
010
Grog @grogdev.bsky.social · 01/05/2026
They're actually not adding AI to the engine, wasn't mentioned in the blog post and has been clarified via Discord. The new CLI can be used for many things, including AI (if you set it up to). The article people are referencing is PR investor speak by Opera and a big nothing burger

Yep, just GameMaker! This is a great starting tutorial to dip your toes in and covers the same logic in code and drag n drop: youtu.be/nwlvT-L9vFg?... Godot is also awesome and free, it may be worth trying both and see what clicks. Here's a good intro to Godot: youtu.be/LOhfqjmasi0?...

Gamemaker is free for non commercial use, and even then youd only pay once you make monies off your game

The difference with this one is it's an actual aseprite addon, you slice up your sprites in aseprite and can bulk or single sprite import

Gmlink has done absolute wonders for my work flow. Some of the older ones would break often and I'd spend more time troubleshooting. pr0te.itch.io/gm-link

If you aren't already it may be worth asking on the GameMaker discord, the folks in the help channels are awesome, or if you wanted you can send me a DM there if you want some suggestions. Tho depending on where you're at, switching engines, especially if one works better for you isn't a bad thing

Grog @grogdev.bsky.social · 08/04/2026
What's the issue? These sort of things are more likely to be code related vs engine related and can follow you

Are you on a recent build or a few versions out of date? Regions have been working pretty well in the more recent versions. And yeah the new code editor is such a big step up

There are a ton of free and paid assets you can use to build your game. Using those for edits or as a template for your own stuff is also a great way to dive into art yourself as well. Check out sites like itch.io or kenney.nl

Gamemaker is free and fully featured for non commercial use. After you start making money, the commercial license is 100 bucks. It's great for beginners, but I'd recommend just diving into YouTube tutorials for any of the engines you mentioned and seeing which one speaks to you.

There aren't any limitations in the free license, and you only need to get the commercial license once you've actually made money with one of your projects

I think the answer will eventually be prefabs but we don't have those yet. I typically have a standalone project for the framework on GitHub, and to update the games using it I export a yymps file.

You can always roll back to a specific version of GameMaker, and not update going forward. I'm also curious as to what's broken, I've updated a lot myself so been through it before if you want another set of eyes. Regardless, Godot is dope

I use GameMaker so I'm biased, but I'd suggest that. Ultimately the best bet is to just dive in and follow a tutorial and see how it clicked. If you're not feeling it check out Godot. The official GameMaker space rocks tutorial is a great starting point

I really like organizing by context works really well for me! I might have a player folder, the object inside, and the folders for sprites, audio, and scripts relating to the player. If you're interested in an example I can send a screenshot when I'm at my PC!
