One cursed thing after having messed with analog video too much is that I now see how unrealistic all those "VHS" effects are that some youtubers love so much. For example, they'd just overlay some horizontal stripes of noise on the image to show "fast forward". But, when fast forwarding a real […]

When it comes to modern software, where is the line between a backdoor and automatic updates?

Apple's threat model for macOS is... interesting. You need permissions for damn near everything, but somehow, directly communicating with a USB device isn't one of those things. Record audio? Gonna need a permission for that, and a bright orange badge will appear in the menu bar the whole time […]

I think I know why people on Instagram post more stories than every other type of content. Stories are the only type of content there that isn't subject to the algorithm. You only see stories from people you follow. They are sorted somewhat algorithmically, but I believe it's just based on how […]

Wow, Vivaldi on Android has extensions now. That's very cool, I didn't expect that. I mean, I browse HN from my phone for the most part, so the simple AI-deemphasizing userscript I made for it a while ago is gonna be quite useful there for example. I have a bunch of other extensions installed […]

Just spent a few hours looking for a very specific Finnish TV commercial I vaguely remember seeing as a kid. I'm still not sure if I found it. I even tried AI. The only thing it meaningfully helped with was the correct spelling of the name of that drink. I remembered it as "мяукатти", it's […]

Seemingly all iOS developers are excited about their apps breaking on the iPhone Duo. Android development is so boring in this regard. We've had folding devices for years now but every Android device that came out in the last 10 years has the status bar at the top of the screen. The API allows […]

An idea: a Mac app called iTrustMyself. It runs in the background and listens for file system changes. When a new file is created, if it has the com.apple.quarantine extended attribute, the app removes it, effectively defeating what Apple calls "security".

I'm somewhat surprised that in macOS Sequoia, the WindowServer process doesn't leak memory. Also surprised that they didn't backport that fix to Sonoma.

There's hardly anything that can make a piece of text feel more non-human to me than the non-ironic use of ™ and ®. Somehow even AI slop feels slightly less alienating than this.

AGI any moment now. And if that's version 1.1, I'm afraid to think what did 1.0 look like. Not shown: it adds a mutation observer to document.body and calls that focusChatInput() function from it. The selector for the text input is at least correct, I checked.

Now that there's an iPhone with the status bar on the side of the screen, I imagine Chinese Android phone manufacturers looking at that, thinking "you could do THAT?!", and already contemplating doing very unholy things to SystemUI in their next foldables and maybe even tablets

Here's a cursed idea. So, many modern screens can display colors that are brighter than the regular #FFFFFF white. I know that these color codes are simply 3 bytes in hex, but hear me out... what if we use the next letters in the alphabet for those HDR values. #ZZ00ZZ would be a retina-searing […]

A recurring theme in my conversations with people trying to get me to use AI is that it would "improve my workflow". But what if I'm already completely satisfied with my workflow, and am not looking to "improve" it any way whatsoever? To that, seemingly no one has an answer.
