One rescuer took in a dog from someone that ended up belonging to a man that went to prison and when he got out he broke into her house while her disabled adult son was home alone and stole the dog back. Like, there’s a reason most rescues want to be able to work directly with the shelter!

animals being left on the streets and to the people who find them who end up spending weeks begging every rescue in a six hour radius for SOME sort of help. Did you know most private rescues won’t even take animals from the public? They pull from shelters because it’s safer, legally and physically.

The founder of SOCKs (a local rescue we partner with via Super Furiends) lost her house to an electrical fire several days ago. They got most of the cats out of the house but couldn’t save four of their cats. Super Furiends is helping her network for placement of the cats that now have nowhere to go

Phoenix is still tiny but very much acts like a kitten his age. We’re taking the growth and head stuff one day at a time, it still seems within normal limits for a runty baby, but given how the whole litter was there could definitely be additional stuff going on with him.

Phoenix is doing really well (but still small) and we have our outstanding backlog of veterinary bills finally paid off thanks to some very kind people, so next step is working toward raising the money for his palate surgery. And for him to start growing, or it will be ages before he’s big enough.

We had to say goodbye today to the best dog I’ve ever had. 😭 We knew the time was coming for a while now, but it doesn’t get any easier. His hips became problematic years ago and we’d been managing his pain, but recently he’s been having a harder and harder time getting up. Love you, Reinhardt.

Apparently my UCSF neurosurgery referral was denied months ago and my previous surgeon was supposed to notify me and no one did, so I’ve just been slowly developing increasingly alarming signs of worsening nerve damage and I am back at step one and no one felt like informing me. 🤷

The little baby in the second photo appears to have microphthalmia and is very likely blind (but still incredibly cute). Blind cats are pretty unstoppable, but he’d probably benefit from rescue placement, as hard as that is to find these days… Thank you for planning on doing TNR to help them out!

Phoenix is on antibiotics and we hooked an oxygen concentrator up to Wendy’s incubator and his ribcage is already looking a lot better! Unfortunately the antibiotics have given him terrible diarrhea, so we’re working on that now. Still gaining weight and very opinionated!

I really love Bluesky because the vast majority of people here are so weirdly respectful. People over on Facebook meanwhile keep asking why we didn’t do more for the two kittens that passed, and like, we’re working with Dr Vernau at UC Davis- there wasn’t anything else we COULD do for them. :/

I actually sent Lentil to Friends of Bear! They’re like one county away. We didn’t have room and from the first photos the original finder sent me I thought he had pectus excavatum and would be a relatively easy case, I felt really bad when it ended up being FCKS because it’s a bit more complicated.

We’re working on a plan for Phoenix, but it’s hard- we still owe our veterinarian about $35k and if Phoenix survives he’s going to need about $10k in cleft palate surgery. I’m not in a fabulous place to be making decisions about this either, because I’m also dealing with a death in my family.

We did unfortunately lose Pegasus and Griffon. Phoenix has been doing good and gaining, but today it became obvious that something is not right with his chest, we’re worried he may have developed flat chested kitten syndrome (or FCKS, which is close to what I said when I got the photos from Wendy).

No signature anywhere? I spent like almost twenty years trying to remember who did a sculpture piece I commissioned at (I think an) AnthroCon, finally figured out the artist had quietly transitioned years ago and I’ve BEEN watching him for at least ten years unknowingly. 😂
