The family living in the flat above mine seems to have outsourced their infant's parenting to an iPad and the children's music it's playing sounds like a rave. Do we have any idea what high-stimulation media does to cognitive development? Are there any studies? #neuroscience #tech

Second day of 12 hrs at the assembly line for minimum wage. It reminds me that behind every physical thing, there are hundreds, if not thusands of hours of labor. The question is: what's it all for?

This street in Brno is very close to the city center. Right now there are a handful of shops, but for the most part it's not a space people come to by choice. Every time I walk it or pass by on the tram, I see so much potential. In my ideal world, every street is an avenue.
Street in its current form, with two lanes for cars and two lanes for trams, as well as a pretty wide sidewalk. My vision for the street, where cars and trams share two lanes in the middle of the road. Trees shield the sidewalk from the vehicle road. Benches have been placed between the trees, turning the street into a common space.

Am I understanding this correctly? EU's new #PPWR packaging regulations force companies to register (and payroll a representative) in every single member state to be legally allowed to ship across borders? Effectively ending free trade for small businesses within their own single market??

I feel like I'm having a kind of anti-AI psychosis where I suspect any content I come across to be AI. Today in a Bolt taxi for example, the driver was playing some soul song and the lyrics and the beat both sounded like it was made by AI. It's making it really difficult to enjoy creative works...

The best part of writing prequels is that seemingly small and unnecessary details suddenly become part of a much bigger world building effort. #worldbuilding #fantasy #writing #booksky #readersky
Except from "Tales of the Valley: Odyssey" by Benjamin Grimm.

“May I?” She extended her arms toward the pistols.
“Of course, what is mine is yours! They do no good on a shelf collecting dust.”
“In that case, I think I’ll borrow this one,” the orange man announced, holding a musket with an unusually large trumpet-like muzzle. The head of an ax was attached beneath the muzzle, turning the entire weapon into a handle.
“Ah yes, especially made for someone just like you to go berserk. I haven’t seen it in action for decades. It all started when a man by the name Leif stepped off his longship,” Attaway began. A red dagger holstered on a stand prevented me from paying attention to the rest of the story. Red candles illuminated the framed photograph of a young Asian woman.
“Sakura’s Kodachi. Once wielded by a beautiful female warrior in the province of Chisanaki,” Attaway said behind me. “I met her during my travels there. She happened to be my first love, swept me right off my feet.” He was going to tell another long story.
“Need options if the bullets run out, I suppose,” I interrupted.
“Very true, Leah. Very true,” he patted my back. “Go ahead. It won’t bite.”
I took a few steps towards the Kodachi and lifted it from its stand.
“Give it a swing,” Attaway nodded towards the straw man beside Sakura’s little altar.
I unsheathed the blade and raised it above my head. Might have put a little too much force into my slice, because the straws of hay felt no tougher than air, and I made a dent in Attaway’s floor.
Excerpt from the prequel "Tales of the Valley: Genesis" by Benjamin Grimm, set half a century before Odyssey.

“If we are going to be friends,” she said, “I should at least know your name.”
“Christoph Attaway.”
“At-ta-way.”
“Yes.”
“What does it mean?”
“Christoph is from a saint. He carried travelers across a river. Attaway is… something about a road, I think.”
“Fitting. Welcome to Chisanaki, At-ta-way,” she tasted the syllables again. “Mine means
cherry blossom. They bloom for one jun each spring.”
“Jun?”
“Ten days.”
“And then?”
“Then they fall.”
The path widened where the compound wall on our left thickened with a building
grown into its inner side: a long structure whose back was the wall and whose front opened
onto the compound through several evenly spaced doors.
“Sakura, was it? No last name?” I asked, because I did not want the conversation to
end.
“Our family is too old for surnames.” She did not elaborate.

I think the data is pretty clear: the EU needs to enact #EUfirst policies and become a significant counterweight to the US and China.
A strong majority of EU citizens want to reduce dependencies on digital infrastructure from third countries.

I used to be a moral relativist, but writing this passage made me question it. Do you think evil knows it's evil? Is "wrong" something we're taught by our culture, or something everyone can feel intuitively? #booksky #readersky #philosophy #morality #ethics
An excerpt from Benjamin Grimm's upcoming novel "Tales of the Valley: Genesis" discussing morality:

“Who decides?” I said, realizing Ye was treading very close to bullshit territory. “You say it as if it were written somewhere a man could go and check. Who knows what’s best? What’s right and what’s wrong?”
Ye’s face did not stiffen the way Chiesa’s had. If anything he looked pleased.
“No one knows what is right. Any man who offers to hand down what is good for all people is a thief counting your fingers while he shakes your hand.”
“Then you have just argued my side.”
“Right is one question. Wrong is another. No one needs to be told what is wrong. The man doing it knows already.”
“How?”
“By the work he does to call it something else. The wrongdoer has every reason to rationalize and deny, yet they know anyway. That knowledge, despite all incentive to suppress it, becomes the proof that wrong is real and undeniable.”
“And if he comes to believe his justifications?”
“Then he has done the work well.”
I went hunting for the hole in it. I had found the hole in every tidy thing anyone ever set before me, and I trusted there would be one here.
“A man’s child takes a fever,” Ye said, before I had it. “Three streets away is a physician who could break it by nightfall. The man cannot pay. The physician has children of his own, and an empty woodshed, and a winter on the way, so he does not open the gate, and the child dies. Go and ask the physician whether it was right or wrong. He will give you his children, and the woodpile, and the winter. He will not tell you it was right, but he will never admit it was wrong.”
