[uspol] Look if wheeling out a disabled man who's been in jail since 2013 anyway and shooting him to death on livestream in order to demonstrate that being a terrorist is bad isn't enough to win me the Nobel Peace Prize this time, I really don't know what is going on in the heads of the […]

Apparently if that 3.8 million tons of diesel that Trump has arranged to give Putin vast amounts of money for, if they do materialise and they do all go to the US only, would represent about 10 days of consumption.

More usefully something like: include "/etc/nftables/rules/local-*.nft" parses them all (if any) in alphabetical order.

A useful feature of nftables: optional includes. Inside your usual ruleset if you do something like: include "/etc/nftables/rules/foo.nft" and that file doesn't exist, the rule set won't pass a check. You'll get a syntax error there. But if you use a wildcard like: include […]

From this day in 2020, the first Covid autumn. Dog sitting bookings were sparse what with no one going anywhere, so I couldn't choose to only care for sighthounds. It was an eclectic household of mostly small fluffies: 3 chihuahuas, 1 bichon frise, a […] [Original post on social.bitfolk.com]

I was listening to a documentary about stand up comedy. It seems the earliest known example of stand up comedy was performed by Charlie Case, a black American, in the 1880s. He was a vaudeville performer who grew tired of having to perform in blackface and switched to humorous monologues about […]

[Spoilers for Silo season 3] I think the problem is that the nanotech weapon subplot is too big. It's a bigger deal than the silos, or nuclear annihilation. To have it at all is a bit much but to have it be *Iran* developing it is really far out. I haven't read the books so please no spoilers […]

[Spoilers for Silo season 3] Silo was going so well but has let itself down a bit for me by suggesting that Iran was able to develop clouds of nanotech capable of intercepting and taking control of fighter jets. The basic idea strains credulity but they could have picked so many other enemies […]

It's strange because I recently listened to James O'Brien interview Eric Idle and normally I find O'Brien to be a good interviewer but it was pretty wooden, Idle didn't seem very animated at all and it was all just a bit meh. This one's not like that.

Just listening to a podcast about the war of 1812. Apparently the American president of the time entered into a bun ch of disastrous trade embargoes that crippled the economy, and was quite keen on annexing Canada, saying it would be as easy as a short march. Crazy times.

[ukpol] But being generous it would struggle to make up 2% of the income tax take. So maybe don't worry about what the most awful of 150 people do resulting in some tiny fraction of 2% being lost.

[ukpol] Adn even the BBC when discussing this can't help itself but to trot out the line, "the top1% of earners in the UK pay 25% of all income tax." Nice stat. Perfectly believable. Also entirely irrelevant and and in many cases an intentional misuse of people's inability to comprehend just […]

[ukpol] Certainly hearing Hargreaves say, "UK isn't sliding, it's slid. It's never coming back," and Fred Done say, "I'm too old to leave the UK but I wouldn't wish to be born there now" does strongly influence my chances of giving money to Hargreaves Lansdown or Betfred (ha!)

Blech, Firefox has updated from 156.0.1 to 157.0 and with it comes this Nova redesign thing which seems to move the container tab colour from the right side of the tab to a thin line on top. Which looks bloody awful when you use vertical tabs, as I do. So much for "vertical tabs are now a first […]
