Discord is like a very cool party, maybe a themed party, at someone's house. Many good conversations are possible but you need an invite to get in the door. It can be daunting when you first step in but once you're used to the disco lighting it gets easier.

Grez @grez.bsky.social · 14/06/2025

Now Xitter's like closing time at the pub, much harder to find those good conversations, a lot of your friends have left already, plus if you're unlucky someone will barf on you.

Twitter used to be like a big science conference, or like Speakers Corner in the Domain: a place where you could listen to interesting conversations, maybe contribute too; place for long conversations with those of similar interests.

Grez @grez.bsky.social · 14/06/2025

Facebook used to be like after-church cuppa or school pickups: informal casual chat with your community. Now it's like being a tourist in Times Square: blaring advertisements and surrounded by strangers.

110

Grez @grez.bsky.social · 14/06/2025

Instagram is like the cinema ads before the main movie : succession of bright interesting faces and places. You might have favourites but they don't know you, it's not a community really. No meaningful interaction, but still enjoyable if you pick the right film.

So I remember 'way back when a Catholic was running for (USA) president, because it was an electoral liability. He had to promise that he wouldn't let the Pope tell him how to lead America.

( #indiegames I saw at #PaxAus) I don't know if anything I say could adequately encompass a city built on a spacefaring Sky Whale. Looks gorgeous, release date in 2025. By new Zealand group @balancingmonkeygames.com, reviewed on www.rockpapershotgun.comm

game artwork of a huge craggy dark interstellar Sky Whale, outlined against the red-gold light of a sun in deep space. The whale has a town built on its dorsal surface.

I'm ongoing astonished at Tron's resurgence. I remember the original movie last century being the last word in lame. Cute, but lame. Yet I still remember it? Must have had something

(#indiegames I saw at #PaxAus) #Tavernkeeper So business sims are a thing? I'm done with farming and peasant towns, I'm gonna have a pub. Customisable filth & flammability! Looks like it's got humour, characters, and character. By @greenheartgames.bsky.social, listed for 2025 release on Steam

Screenshot of design setting for the game's tavern. There's a blueprint/model of the pub building, ornamented with decor and sprites. To the right, a panel listing the building's customisable features : temperature, brightness, filth, noise, decoration, damage, and flammability.

Australian elections are so chill that it's a nationwide excuse to hold a sausage sizzle or cake stall at your local primary school #democracysausage #Straya #vote

Clip from the Democracy Sausage web page, it's a map of Melbourne with symbols showing the polling booths where a community group is holding a stall on election day. The symbols indicate what's available : sausage in bread, halal option, vegetarian option, cake stall, coffee.

#Adelaide 's Botanic Garden is the absolute goods. We went there for the #Chihuly exhibition, which was exceptional, then went around the gardens afterwards and that was fab too. Adelaide is so great. #art #glassblowing #sculpture

Chihuly glass sculpture, red and yellow, in a tropical garden

Chihuly glass sculpture, kind of like a huge bowl with a fluted edge, swirled red on the outside green inside. Or maybe it looks more like a giant clam. Or an enormous alien flower

Love the way the winter bunnies peep out of their burrows and adorably flop their ears. I mean, their whole purpose is to be trapped for meat and skins, but still cute. #Outlanders #PomeloGames

So I want to talk a little about my work on Quantum Witch because it’s rather special to me on a personal level. Specifically, my work on this game is heavily influenced by two things: living in the Bible Belt for 12 years, and (content warning) the topic of emotional abuse…

Another one I liked at previous #PaxAus was Hissy Fit. It's a snake game: customise your danger noodle, wreck things, grow. Cute graphics; fun. Parents of little kids: this isn't Bluey. The playable beast chomps people and dies in cartoon-gruesome. @hissyfitgame from Panda Arcade

I'd like to think I'd relax with a game that challenges my brain or engages my emotions. idk though after a stressy work day I'm all about cheap adrenaline thrills and whimsical humour #crossyroad *nearly gets squished by a parade float of dancing dinosaurs*

(remembering #indiegames I admired at previous #PaxAus) I liked the look of MistForge, a terraforming roguelite with a hostile sentient mist. It felt pleasantly crerpy, like Lt Ripley does Stardew in Dredge. Also with tentacles? No release date on its Steam page. @mistforgegame.com
