A terrible wrong has been made right

I’m extraordinarily grateful to have just seen Art Spiegelman for the 3rd time in my life, this time for a discussion of IN THE SHADOW OF NO TOWERS for the 25th anniversary of 9/11. I didn’t want to bother him, but as he walked out I said “thank you for making me fall in love with comics”

The wildest part of “99 Problems” is when the cop tells Jay-Z he “was doing 55 in a 54 zone.” Where on earth is the speed limit *54* mph? That’s diabolical

Daffy Duck cyber-bullies Lex Luthor so hard in this *2018* comic that Lex deletes the entire social media site he owns. I don’t really have a take, I just think more people should know about that

I’m still in awe that TITANE was listed as one of Obama’s top films the year it came out. It’s not even just about him specifically. The idea of any POTUS watching body horror where a lady makes sweet sweet love to a car, let alone publicly saying he loved it, simply does not compute

I always wondered if @ssnyder1835.bsky.social and/or Greg Capullo took any cues from Mongo when Batman punched the Joker's horse in "Death of the Family" because that gave me an unexpectedly (for an otherwise pretty grim story!) hearty guffaw too

Here’s a more obscure Superman for ya by Priest and Mark Bright. Elseworlds story in which the Kryptonians survive the destruction of Krypton by colonizing Earth into an apartheid regime, led by Jor-El and Lara. Priest really leans into Superman as a Moses figure. This isn’t another “evil Superman”

I was assigned to create a “dream” lesson plan for one of my current grad school classes, so I made it about ALL-STAR SUPERMAN. My idea is for students to codify the superhero genre. Superman is the quintessential superhero. All-Star is the quintessential superhero comic in the best way

RIP Marjane Satrapi. A lot of people have been talking about PERSEPOLIS lately for good reason. It’s hard to overstate how much of an impact it made, not just on (autobio) comics, but on the way I, personally, started to view geopolitics. The film adaptation is great too, but the comic’s best

Mazzuchelli’s other superhero masterpiece, of course, is DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN. I always go back and forth between whether I prefer Born Again or Batman Year One. Year One is tighter but Born Again hits harder emotionally. Pairs nicely with Waid and company’s Daredevil run in that regard

Say what you will about Frank Miller the last few decades (I’ve said plenty), but he was on fire in the 80s, and Batman Year One might be his finest work. Might still be the best Batman story too, thanks largely to David Mazzuchelli’s art. It’s a miracle he gave us TWO superhero masterpieces

Idk what I was expecting from DRACULA, MOTHERFUCKER, but I was so pleasantly surprised. Creepy, hypnotic, and completely different from any other Dracula riff. I was already a fan of Alex de Campi and Erica Henderson, but after Squirrel Girl I had no idea Henderson had such a a great eye for horror

As I wrote some years ago, Kyle Starks is one of our greatest living cartoonists. SEXCASTLE is the comic that introduced me to him. The one-liners make me cackle every time and the action is deceptively well-choreographed

Maybe my favorite Alan Moore book after Watchmen? Maybe it’s even better than Watchmen? Alan Moore has some stiff competition from… Alan Moore. Either way, From Hell is a masterpiece. Dense, challenging, dark, and deeply rewarding. I have to check out more of Eddie Campbell’s work

Mark Waid’s 2011-2015 DAREDEVIL run with artists like Chris Samnee, Javier Rodriguez, Paulo Rivera, Marcos Martin and more. One of a few comics that practically saved my life during the worst period of my life. Making Matt’s depression canon was brilliant. It’s my #1 superhero run of all time.
