This shit's so farcical you'd think there's a mole or three trying to set him up, if there were any accountability left other than (hopefully) the elections.

The growing number of AI agents roaming the internet will eventually force us to verify what the old web mostly presumed: that there is a morally and legally accountable person somewhere in the chain.

Of course, the single issue thinking and purity tests feed poisonously into all of the large scale systems of domination, which include all systems based on majority voting.

Greg Cassel @gregsc1.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
People often fixate puritanically on single issues which cause them to vilify specific actions or actors. While some issues are terribly important, the problem with purity tests is that they selectively excuse an unlimited number of related compromises (yes, compromises) and consequences.

Such simplification may seem to enable practical actions or, at least, meaningfully defined efforts toward goals which could prove to be practically impossible. We generate belonging and reduce stress by delimiting ourselves.

Greg Cassel @gregsc1.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
People often avoid such ambivalence by falling into the generic equivalent of single issue voting, where they determine a single supposed need at the exclusion of all other factors in complex issues.

Greg Cassel @gregsc1.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
I don't think that we evolved biologically or culturally to process the explosively growing ambivalence which we can easily experience these days, where we're aware that many actions and strategies simultaneously contain immense costs, benefits, risks AND opportunities.

Anytime someone holds concentrated wealth and power, they're constantly motivated to justify holding it instead of sharing it or giving it away. This motivation works steadily and perniciously.

Right-sized relationships: in most aspects of life we need far greater tolerance of diverse perspectives and self-determination, BUT society is unsustainably hurtling toward potential doom because we complicitly feed deeply destructive forces, and that must change asap.

The problem with this world is that the vast majority of clearly preventable harm occurs through deeply normalized behaviors (actions and inactions) which can't be easily vilified. We can only marginalize such behaviors by growing deeply prosocial partnerships and communities.

Surprisingly well-detailed perspective, although pessimistic in some areas where I see uncertainty-- plus, doesn't show awareness of the core problem with "democracy" (i.e. electing representatives who use factionalized majoritarian decision-making, instead of prioritizing consent and partnership.)

The most secure and sustainable foundation for policy is to place a clear and sincere emphasis on positive interactions and desired behaviors.

Greg Cassel @gregsc1.bsky.social · 29/07/2026
We're each bound to many communities, but one key feature of healthy prosocial culture (and community) is to repeatedly generate optionality in most relationships and interactions. This doesn't mean that there's no role for commitment, but we should often rethink why and when.
020
Greg Cassel @gregsc1.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
In creating or describing optional assignable roles, we should start by describing the expectations (i.e. purpose or function) and then define any permissions or benefits which aren't clearly present within that description.

This seems rather deeply related to a post I made earlier today: "We are invariably unqualified to judge human beings, but we must often evaluate their actions." We can, at least in theory, skip every subtext of personal judgment. (Not to imply that I consistently do; life is messy, and I'm a mess.)

It's amazing how many powerful people, in the US and elsewhere, intentionally endure the POTUS publicly and explicitly threatening war crimes. I know that he and his cronies have been "flooding the zone" but could we just hold a thought long enough to hold him accountable for that?

Nothing drains me more than getting inefficient or disrupted on effectively standardized tasks. I already have more than enough unpredictable, exploratory, deeply creative activities to occupy the rest of my days.
000
Greg Cassel @gregsc1.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
Apart from those HUGE problems, efficiency can be really great! I love seeking efficiency with predictably standardized tasks such as washing dishes or (sometimes) updating a database. It can be very mindful, meditative and inspiring. It can also free the mind up for brainstorming on other subjects.
100
Greg Cassel @gregsc1.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
Some people in my circles have understandably been criticizing "efficiency". It's a good time to not throw the baby out with the bathwater! There are at least two bad types of "efficiency" in this bathwater: (1) extraction of value (2) subjugation of valid creative tension

If we believe that personality isn't fixed, we're more likely to realize when we were personally responsible for harmful events, and to do whatever we reasonably can to make amends and come back into community.
000
Greg Cassel @gregsc1.bsky.social · 21/07/2026
Justice is more likely when people can genuinely reduce their attachment to the person they "were" when they created great harm, but without reducing their responsibility for atonement. It helps, of course, if we don't have deep-set notions of supposed personal "essence" or innate personality.
100
Greg Cassel @gregsc1.bsky.social · 21/07/2026
As conversations will often be imperfect and unfair, we can only work to minimize unfair vilification-- and to manifest transformative justice-- through ongoing dialogue.
100
Greg Cassel @gregsc1.bsky.social · 21/07/2026
^ Implicitly, all vilification is unfair, because we unfairly blame individuals instead of practically-treatable environments and systems. However, we can't avoid many harms which almost inevitably occur (often to unfairly-vilified people) during processes of atonement and transformative justice.
100
Greg Cassel @gregsc1.bsky.social · 21/07/2026
It's terribly important to prioritize marginalized & precarious people, but also to not unfairly vilify or harm others. Not implying that we can be perfectly fair (or perfectly anything) as we explore ethical issues, but we must work to minimize preventable and often counterproductive harms.

Greg Cassel @gregsc1.bsky.social · 20/07/2026
I think it's generally desirable for helpful limitations to be personal decisions or (often) agreements, including community-wide agreements, instead of intentionally being built into a tool according to the assumptions or preferences of a tool- builder or business.
000
Greg Cassel @gregsc1.bsky.social · 20/07/2026
Yes, we select some apps based on intentional limitations. Such limitations can be developed on per-community or per-user bases, including an endless variety of filtering options.
110
Greg Cassel @gregsc1.bsky.social · 20/07/2026
I'm not referring only to social apps, but you have a good point. Social clustering & network effects can be developed through protocols and open app ecosystems, instead of proprietary walled garden; "all" we have to do is sufficiently switch the focus of protocol & software dev resources.

Note I'm not suggesting that software engineering is generally a bullshit job, or that any particular software jobs are bullshit. I just mean that the industry is mostly mired in bullshit.
000
Greg Cassel @gregsc1.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
I suppose that if I'd ever developed professional software engineering skills, I'd desire to conserve the false scarcities which support most of the software industry. Even disregarding the (often insane) evolution of AI, however, we as a species must get over bullshit jobs and false scarcities.
100
Greg Cassel @gregsc1.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
Of course, we should get to customize generic apps per user and per community, and we could (in an open source interoperable digital ecosystem) benefit from diverse app forks, extensions and plugins which optimize UX. However, the vast majority of software dev serves to manufacture false scarcity.
