#BirdOfTheDay is #Iridescence Alt. is #mothers, any female bird. #birdphotography #AntilleanCrested #Hummingbird #OrthorhyncusCristatus #ECK #birds #photography #birdsofbluesky #nature #wildlife #Dominica #NikonZ8
A small, dark hummingbird* perches at an angle on a twig, gripping the bark with tiny black feet. Almost the entire bird reads as sooty blackish-green — until you reach the head, where a spiky, forward-swept crest blazes turquoise, emerald, and gold-green, tipped with a flash of blue. The short straight bill points left, one dark eye catches a glint of light, and faint bronze-green edges show along the folded wings and flank. The background dissolves into soft green bokeh, with a sprig of fine compound leaves (looks like a legume, possibly *Leucaena* or similar) entering from the upper right.

*Species: Antillean Crested Hummingbird (*Orthorhyncus cristatus*), an adult male — the erect crest is diagnostic and unique to males. It's a common resident throughout the Lesser Antilles.

Cause of Color Shift: That crest has almost no pigment doing the work. Hummingbird feather barbules contain stacked platelets of melanin riddled with air bubbles, layered in precise arrays a few hundred nanometers thick. Light reflecting off the top and bottom of each layer interferes with itself: wavelengths that come back in phase are amplified, the rest cancel out. The result is a thin-film interference mirror, not a dye.

Because the effect depends on the *path length* light takes through those stacks, the color depends on viewing angle. Tilt the head a few degrees and the effective spacing shortens, pushing the reflected wavelength toward blue — which is exactly what you see here, green grading to blue at the crest tips. Turn away from the narrow reflection cone entirely and the feather goes flat black, since the underlying melanin absorbs almost everything.

That's also why the body looks so drab: it's ordinary melanin plumage, so it stays dark regardless of angle. The bird carries a directional signal lamp on its head that it can effectively switch on and off just by turning — brilliant for a rival or a female facing it, invisible to a predator watching from the side.

This is Charlie, a juvenile #GreatBlueHeron, aka Don Quixote. This is another shot from his terrifying “REED BATTLE ROYALE.” I love the curl of feathers on his/her? right wing. #BirdOfThDay #yourchoice #Birds #ECK #ArtChallenges #EastCoastKin #PhotographersUnited #UrbanWildlife #NikonZ8
A juvenile Great Blue Heron stands in shallow, rippling water, wings raised high and half-folded above its back in a moment of unbalanced motion. The wings dominate the upper left of the frame — layered slate-grey and blue-grey feathers fanning outward, the primaries splayed like spread fingers, individual barbs catching the light. The bird's body is a mottled grey-white, fluffy and slightly disheveled, with rain-like flecks of pale streaking down the chest.

The long neck curves down and to the right in an S-shape, ending in a heavy yellow-grey dagger bill that grips a thin willow branch. Green willow leaves trail from the stick down into the water. The head is pale grey with a spiky black crest and a bright yellow eye ringed dark. Two thin legs plunge into water thrown up in spray and droplets around them.

The background is soft-focus green water, a fallen log along the top edge, and blades of reed grass entering from the upper right. Bottom left: "©Gregory Rothman 2025."

- That stick-battle is likely practice, not play with purpose — young herons rehearse nest-material handling and bill dexterity long before they'll ever build one.
- Herons have specialized "powder down" feathers on the chest that crumble into a fine dust; they use it with a comb-like serrated middle claw to blot fish slime off their plumage.
- The S-curve neck is structural: an elongated sixth vertebra acts as a hinge, letting the head fire forward like a released spring.
- Despite a six-foot wingspan, an adult weighs only about 5–6 pounds.
- Their eyes shift toward binocular vision at night — they hunt in near-darkness comfortably.

- Great Blue Herons are essentially monomorphic — males average slightly larger with a marginally thicker bill, but the ranges overlap so heavily that a single photo can't tell you. The plumage does reveal is age: the solid dark crown (no white crown stripe), lack of long head and breast plumes, and the shaggy, loosely streaked neck all mark this as a juvenile.

Had to repost. Accidently tattooed the first image…🥹 Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #MultiColour, birds with 3 or more colors. Alt #DucksOutOfWater Barely Squeaking in, this guy greeted us at breakfast each morning in Dominica. #Bananaquit ( #CoerebaFlaveola) #ECK #Birds #photographersunite

A small, plump, short-tailed songbird gripping the top edge of a weathered wooden chair, seen in profile facing left against a soft beige wall. The head, throat, and upper breast are sooty black, cut by a bold white stripe running from above the eye back along the side of the crown — the bird's most distinctive marking. A small patch of coral-pink flesh shows at the corner of the mouth. The bill is black, short, sharp, and slightly downcurved, like a fine curved needle. The back, wings, and tail are dark slate blue-grey, the folded wing feathers edged in paler grey. The breast and belly are a vivid lemon-to-olive yellow, brightest on the flanks. The legs are long for the body, slender, and blue-grey, ending in oversized dark claws that curl over the rail's edge. The undertail area is dull white. The bird leans forward slightly, alert, as if about to spring.

**Curious facts**

- **Nectar thief.** That sharp bill isn't long enough to reach into most flowers properly, so bananaquits stab a slit in the base of the corolla and drink from the side — taking the nectar without pollinating the plant.
- **The "sugar bird."** They're famously bold around people in the Caribbean, raiding sugar bowls and fruit plates on hotel terraces. Dominicans and other islanders often call them sugar birds.
- **Two nests, two jobs.** They build bulky domed nests with a side entrance — and construct separate ones purely for sleeping in, year-round, not just for breeding.
- **Enormously variable.** Around 40 subspecies are recognized across the Caribbean and Latin America. On Grenada and St. Vincent an all-black morph occurs, looking so different that it was once thought a separate species.
- **Taxonomic wanderer.** Long placed in its own family, it's now considered a tanager (Thraupidae).
- Not to be confused with Dominica's national bird, the far rarer Sisserou or Imperial Amazon.

This Reddish Egret white morph in classic canopy pose works for both #BirdoftheDay themes of #CHE and the alt #Memories. Memorable for how happy I was when I saw it, and for the image winning a national award and being published. #birds #photography #Florida
A Reddish Egret white morph is standing in horizontal profile view facing right, in still, shallow, gray-blue water in very late day light. The graceful, large, long-necked, wading bird is all white with black legs and a long pink bill with black at the end of it. The egret is caught in a split second of its hunting “dance”, with both long wings arched beautifully over their head and pointing downward towards the water forming a canopy. A part of the bird’s reflection in the water is below and looks golden in the warm light. Reddish Egrets are fairly rare, and a white morph even more so. This species typically dances and spins with wings up over the head like this while looking for fish — a joy to watch in action.

A great blue heron takes flight at a nature area in Longmont, Colorado, with the Boulder Flatirons rising in the background.

In this vertical color photograph, a great blue heron fills the frame in left profile as it launches from a tree branch with its wings raised high, preparing for flight. The tip of its left wing extends beyond the edge of the frame, emphasizing the bird's impressive wingspan. Warm early morning light bathes the heron and the surrounding landscape, highlighting the rich colors and textures of the scene.

The background features the recently restored bank along the opposite shoreline, which also serves as the levee for St. Vrain Creek. Beyond it, the iconic Boulder Flatirons rise beneath Colorado's brilliant blue sky.

A magnificent action photograph capturing a great blue heron taking flight in the wetland habitat that is essential to its survival.

@alan678.bsky.social for today's theme. The #BirdofTheDay theme is #ScreenFiller. I think this is a barely qualified, but if I don’t find the eagle image I’m thinking of, this will stand. #ECK #birds #SnowyEgret #EgrettaThula #photographersUnited #NikonZ8 #UrbanWildlife #SnowyEgret
This is an action photograph of a Snowy Egret (Egretta thula) captured mid-motion in shallow water.

The bird fills the frame with both wings fully spread in a dramatic V-shape, feathers splayed like white fans against a dark gray, blurred background of water and shoreline. Its entire body is brilliant white. The head faces the camera directly, showing the key identification features: a slender black bill, bright yellow facial skin (lores) between the eye and bill, and a pale yellow eye. One leg is lifted mid-stride, revealing the classic Snowy Egret combination of black legs with yellow feet — often called “golden slippers.”

The egret appears to be dashing or landing in the water, with splashes and droplets frozen around its lifted foot, and small ripples spreading across the calm, slate-gray surface. Wispy plume feathers trail from its head and chest, adding to the sense of movement.

The lighting is soft and overcast, making the white plumage glow against the moody dark water. A photographer’s credit, “©Gregory Rothman 2026,” appears in gold text in the lower right corner.

Today’s #BirdOfTheDay is #QuietReflection any bird paused in thought. Alt #SunriseSunset. A #RedwingBlackbird pauses from strafing to consider the morality of his collective punishment of humans for their sin of destruction of nature. Easy. Back to strafing. #ECK #UrbanWildLife #NikonZ8 #Birds
A Red-winged Blackbird perches on green foliage in the foreground. This male bird displays glossy black plumage with bold orange-red and yellow shoulder patches called "epaulets"—distinctive badges visible on his wings. His posture is alert and upright, facing toward the left side of the frame.

A dramatic metropolitan skyline rises behind the bird. Multiple high-rise buildings dominate the view—gleaming towers in tan, beige, and glass create an urban canyon. A particularly tall, slender white building with a spire stands centrally, while darker glass-clad skyscrapers flank it. Tm.

Vibrant green vegetation fills the bottom foreground, providing natural framing for the bird. The contrast between nature and urban development is striking.

Some Facts about Red-winged Blackbirds
- If you didn’t know, males are fiercely territorial and use their bright epaulets as a dominance display—when threatened, they flash these patches to warn rivals
- These birds can produce over 100 distinct song variations
- They're found across North America and are among the most abundant birds on the continent
- Despite their aggressive behavior, they're social birds that often gather in flocks of thousands during migration
