#Historians: if the first "Constitutional relations" box on this C19 census form is checked for men, did that mean person could vote? Talking 1870 census here. The next to this one is about disfranchisement bc of rebellion, so no voting

Great conversation about citizen journalism with SPJ Co tonight at Denver Press Club. Was taken by way panelists and audience showed that “citizen” and “journalist“ each need examination as terms in their own right

My story on the civics of higher ed is out in the summer issue of Pittsburgh Quarterly, with online publication set for later this month. In the meantime if any Pittsburgh people have the magazine in hand would you be willing to photograph the pages? I've not yet been able to get my hands on a copy.

really enjoying this @biblioracle.bsky.social book, especially the suggestion that we call AI “automation” not “intelligence.” Because it’s not. But also think about the connotation of “automation”: that’s what took away my parents’ jobs, ruined cities, ruined lives!

American Memory, a 1987 report issued by the National Endowment for the Humanities, then chaired by Lynne Cheney, called for more interaction between humanities faculty in higher ed and K-12 teachers. My sense is that historians tend to do this kind of thing. Do lit profs?
