Your solution that can lead to 36 Republican justices with 18 year terms to randomly draw from is exactly the solution to avoid. When nominations happen as they have, leading to the 6-3 imbalance, that translates to 24-12 of 36. Every “random” draw still tends toward a 6-3 imbalance.

Just like Aileen Cannon getting the Jack Smith report was random? If Republicans keep choosing the justices, then all 36 of them will eventually be Republicans. Random won’t help. If Democrats choose them, they can turn the majority of 13 much quicker than a random pull from 32. 🤷🏻

Here’s an idea. Want to challenge a voter registration? Pay a $100 processing fee. If you are right, you get a $1000 reward because the Election Board should have caught it first. If you are wrong, you pay a $10,000 fine for submitting a false claim. Challenge 10,000 voters = $100,000,000 fine.

I don't think knowing the composition makes a difference. It hasn't in the federal appeals court where a "random" set of three of the 15 hear the cases. You may not have seen the second post of the pair. Returning to the filibuster to help ensure less partisan judges are confirmed. ->

I say return to the filibuster for justices. Then they need to be less partisan to get to the 60 vote minimum for confirmation.

With only a portion of the justices hearing a case, the decision will be at the whim of which justices were "randomly" picked. With a guy like Trump, random never is. So an important case gets 7 to 9 right-wing justices of the 18 or so comprising a bank of 36 justices. Screwed. That's my concern ->

This is completely indicative of all the other appointments to positions in his regime, whether it’s at DOJ, FBI, DHS, anywhere. There are no qualified people left who will accept a position on a ship, recognized as evil, already well below the water line. Assume it in every future appointment.
