The number of people on Twitter just proclaiming with their whole chest that they can't figure out when someone is too intoxicated to consent to sex is ... concerning!

Greg Gentry @greggentry.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Basically, find that map of the 19 states where involuntary intoxication means consent is given freely up until the person passes out and don't let your kids go to school there. Or, at least warn them about the danger!

In New York, voluntary intoxication can be a defense against a specific intent crime, like in most states. So, you can be TOO DRUNK to form the intent to commit a crime w/in a building. And it can make a contract voidable. You can be TOO DRUNK to sign a contract. But sex? No way!

The number of people out here defending New York's antiquated view of voluntary intoxication and consent (summary: If someone is upright and wasn't slipped a roofie, they can consent. One drink away from a coma, that's fine.) is astounding. www.tabletmag.com/sections/new...

But, this lets X get back to their favorite pastime - moralistically blaming the woman. And Planned Parenthood.
Ben Dreyfuss posting on X:

“One of the problems I think is that places like Planned Parenthood tell people that intoxicated people can't consent. That impaired judgment means you can't consent.
But that isn't the law anywhere. So people are set up to be disappointed with the law....”

New York should be ashamed that TEXAS changed their law before them. Last year Texas made their law that it’s rape if you knew or should have known that someone was too intoxicated to consent. Regardless of whether they voluntarily drank/did drugs or not.

It’s amazing how swiftly X went to “well, NY’s law says that if you voluntarily consume alcohol or drugs you can consent up until you’re literally unconscious, so I guess these boys aren’t rapists. *shrug*” Yeah, that’s a shitty law and only 19 states still have that abomination.

In short, if gender treatment had a large protective effect, no meaningful effect, or a substantial harmful effect this study’s numbers would still be the same.

Those are the direct comparison of Gender referred who didn’t get treatment and those who did. Those numbers include a 920% increase in suicide risk for those who didn’t get treatment and an 80% reduction in risk for those who did.

There IS evidence that surgeries reduce suicidal ideation and the Finnish study is incredibly underpowered to detect a change in completed suicide risk. HUGE error bars. “Adjusted HRs for suicide mortality were 3.2 (95% CI 1.0 to 10.2; p=0.05) and 0.8 (95% CI 0.2 to 4.0; p=0.8), respectively.”

EVERY time we’ve had a wave of immigration, we’ve had people pop up to complain that THESE immigrants, unlike the last wave, aren’t becoming American fast enough. The clearest examples are in political cartoons. Like this one from 1920.
This editorial cartoon illustrates anti-immigration sentiment using a literal interpretation of the "melting pot" metaphor.

Central Imagery and Characters

The Cauldron: In the center sits a very large cooking pot resting over an open fire. The pot is prominently labeled with the words "THE MELTING POT." Steam or smoke rises from the liquid bubbling inside it.

The Figure of Uncle Sam: Standing to the left of the pot is Uncle Sam, representing the United States government. He is wearing his traditional striped pants and vest. He holds a large ladle or spoon, attempting to stir the contents of the pot. His facial expression is strained and overwhelmed, as if he is struggling to maintain control.

The Crowd of Immigrants: Flooding toward the pot from the right side is a dense, chaotic crowd of people representing European and Asian immigrants. They are carrying bundles of clothing and luggage. The line stretches far back into the background, signifying an endless or uncontrollable wave of people.

The Action and Main Conflict
Overflowing the Pot: Instead of waiting to be "melted" or assimilated into the pot, the mass of people is climbing up the side and jumping directly into it all at once.

The "Spoiling" Effect: Because so many people are pouring into the pot simultaneously, the liquid is splashing over the edges. Uncle Sam cannot stir fast enough to assimilate them.

The Message: The visual chaos conveys the idea that too much immigration, arriving too quickly, is ruining the assimilation process and "spoiling the broth" of American identity.

“Zombie arguments” are arguments that have been debunked years ago, but whenever a new generation of conspiracists comes on board they get resurrected and trotted out. Like, “Vaccines cause autism.” But, I think the oldest must be, “these immigrants don’t assimilate like those of yesteryear.”

There are studies showing less suicidal ideation in kids who get puberty blockers (Tordoff '20, Turban '22). There's lower suicide-screening scores in those who get cross-sex hormones (Tordoff 22, Allen 26) And lower ideation & self-harm in those who'd gotten chest surgery (Tan '18).

Whether it's Gender-affirming care, SSRIs, DBT or school-based interventions, any specific mental health related intervention is measured against proxies for suicides - whether the intervention lowers suicidal thoughts (ideation), attempts, ER visits, episodes of self-harm. All of them!

Greg Gentry @greggentry.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
There simply are not enough adolescent suicides to measure whether ANYTHING can affect the NUMBER of suicides in that population. Ben should know this since his substack is called "Hazard Ratio." That's what we're talking about. But there IS EVIDENCE that SUICIDALITY is reduced!

@benryanwriter.bsky.social lies AGAIN about gender affirming care, claiming there's "no evidence that ... surgeries reduce suicides." This is the same bullshit claim about COMPLETED suicides that he repeats ad nauseum and which has been debunked over and over.

Greg Gentry @greggentry.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
We can quibble about whether the studies used appropriate proxies for suicide - Tordoff used PHQ-9 answers in the last several months (feelings that you’d be better off dead). But, Ryan et al don’t have the goods to make those arguments. They don’t WANT to understand those arguments.

That’s why EVERY study of EVERY intervention for teenagers studies suicide against proxies - suicidal ideation, attempts, ER visits. It’s also why it’s DEEPLY ironic that Ben calls his substack “Hazard Ratio,” but keeps citing this flawed study.
161
Greg Gentry @greggentry.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
When you’re figuring out how often something is caused or prevented by an intervention, that’s called hazard ratio. And in calculating that, a critical number is the outcomes - here, completed suicides. You’d need 50+ across experiment and control to show a HUGE effect - 7 is WAY too small!
