The idea is that people around Aotearoa sign a pledge telling political leaders that they want to vote for the environment. It asks that political parties commit to: • Protect & Restore Nature • Make Polluters Pay • Sustainable Food Production • Clean Energy & Transport

“The RMA was designed to protect our air and water from contamination, and our forests, wildlife and coastlines from degradation. That protection has just been well and truly ripped to shreds. These new laws allow companies to cause more pollution and environmental degradation." Gen Toop
121
Greenpeace Aotearoa @greenpeace.org.nz · 22/09/2026
All of this works in the interests of polluting industries. These new laws will make it easier for data centres, mines, feedlots, fish farms and other commercial activities to get consent. The significance of what the Coalition Government has just done cannot be overstated.
131
Greenpeace Aotearoa @greenpeace.org.nz · 22/09/2026
The new law also introduces a new scheme in which ratepayers could be forced to pay companies ‘compensation’ for not polluting the environment. The Government’s own report has estimated this could cost councils up to $2 billion.
121
Greenpeace Aotearoa @greenpeace.org.nz · 22/09/2026
❌ stops councils from introducing stronger local protections like bans on destructive fishing practices ❌ restricts public participation and Māori involvement in environmental decision-making ❌ and weakens protections for native wildlife.

Greenpeace Aotearoa @greenpeace.org.nz · 22/09/2026
The RMA was New Zealand’s main environmental law. It has now been replaced by the Natural Environment Act and the Planning Act. The Natural Environment Act, passed last night, ❌ renders environmental limits legally meaningless ❌ scraps existing iwi agreements

The Govt finally did it. The legal guardrails are gone. We are heading back to a bygone era of smokestacks pumping toxins into our air & pollution pipes contaminating our water. They've written these laws with and for the polluters & the pillagers. And we are going to be the ones who pay for it.

“When governments weaken environmental protections, override Māori rights and shut communities out of decision-making, they attack both nature and democracy. We march because Papatūānuku is not property to be exploited without limit. She is an ancestor and a living system with her own mana and mauri. Protecting her requires constitutional change founded on Te Tiriti, tikanga Māori, human rights and genuine democratic accountability.”
