That's how we protect the peace we've fought so hard for." 4/4

Drumcree isn't a one-off crisis. It's a symptom of a political system that finds it easier to manage division than resolve it, and mediation has to be led by people equipped to find compromise, not by politicians or institutions that have already proven they can't. 3/4

Green Party Belfast City Council Group Leader Brian Smyth said: "We need mediators with no stake in our politics, but real experience resolving conflicts every bit as entrenched as ours. Outside parties need to step back and let both sides actually talk. 2/4

Garvaghy Road residents have called for independent international mediation in the Drumcree dispute. We agree: this can't be fixed by the same institutions that caused it. 1/4

There is a lot of “blame” going around, much of it probably deserved. We chose to focus on ways to resolve this and other issues and get past this.

Northern Ireland deserves better than repeatedly returning to the unresolved fights of the 1990s. We need independent mediation, institutions that function, and honesty about our shared past. Nothing less will stop us coming back here again." 6/6

Drumcree is a symptom of a bigger problem. Nearly three decades into peace, we have still never agreed a comprehensive mechanism for dealing with our past. Until we do, the same flashpoints will keep reopening, again and again. 5/6

The people of the Garvaghy Road have been badly served by institutions and political parties that have used them as bargaining chips. 4/6

People don't just fall through the cracks. Sometimes the cracks are left there on purpose. Underfunded mental health services. Poverty. Homelessness. Isolation. Discrimination. Years-long waiting lists. A benefits system that punishes disabled people for being disabled. 1/4

Early years education should lift every child up, not leave the poorest behind while the system catches up. Tell Givan to delay this change until provision is genuinely universal for every child. Respond to the consultation before 4 December: education-ni.gov.uk/consultat... 5/5

Pre-School Admissions Consultation: Socially Disadvantaged Circumstances (SDC) Criterion
The Department of Education is seeking views on the options available to the Department on any future prioritisation of children from socially disadvantaged circumstances (SDC). After the close of the consultation responses from stakeholders will be analysed and inform the way forward. A report will be prepared summarising the findings.

Investment in early years should be strategic, not scattered. Real fairness is built through proper public investment, not by quietly removing the rule that protected the children who needed it most. 4/5

Green Party Northern Ireland @greenpartyni.org · 09/09/2026
Cllr Brian Smyth, GPNI Assembly candidate for East Belfast, said: "This is about a sharp class divide that already shapes children's lives before they ever start school. Removing this protection now does not close that gap, it widens it before these children have even walked through the door." 3/5
122
Green Party Northern Ireland @greenpartyni.org · 09/09/2026
At a minimum this change should be delayed until every child, without exception, has access to 22.5 hours of pre-school. Repeal the criterion before that point & you’re not levelling the playing field, you are removing protection for a generation of children while the pitch is still half built. 2/5

Green Party Northern Ireland @greenpartyni.org · 09/09/2026
Paul Givan says fairness means scrapping priority for disadvantaged children in pre-school admissions. Real fairness means finishing the job first. Only 65% of children currently have a full-time pre-school place. This is not a universal system yet, whatever the Minister calls it. 1/5

Nearly 39,000 families are stuck in housing stress partly because stalled developments can’t get connected, while house prices keep climbing and the wider economy risks falling billions behind by 2040 if nothing changes. 4/6

Cllr Anthony Flynn, candidate for North Down: “Lough Neagh showed us what happens when water & environmental oversight are left to chance. Uninspected storm overflows & blocked connections across the network are the same failure, just less visible until the bill lands on every household.” 3/6

17,500 homes can’t even connect to the wastewater network. 1,200 storm overflows haven’t even been inspected. This is the same underfunded, unaccountable system that has let Lough Neagh rot for years. It’s not a coincidence, it’s a pattern. 2/6
