I'll send the information from the ASM's website. There were other changes too, with mustelid genera. www.mammaldiversity.org/family/muste...

Also just to have you aware: the clawless otters, small-clawed otters, and smooth-coated otters were recently lumped inside Lutra, according to the American Society of Mammalogists, you may want to read up on that too

Understandable! I do browse on iNaturalist to find pictures that are useful for my encyclopedia ^^

Cute! Could I also use this for Mustelopedia (the Musteloidea wiki)? I'd give credit of course ^^

This is not a "hybrid" though lol This is just my fellow ictonychine mustelid cousin, the zorilla, who likes impersonating mephitids 😂

Winter Grison 🦡 @greater-grison.bsky.social · 14/10/2026

I've seen a few skerrets or skeasels previously and saying "mephitid-mustelid hybrid" got too messy lol

Winter Grison 🦡 @greater-grison.bsky.social · 14/10/2026

I will now refer to mephitid-mustelid hybrids in the fandom as this. Thank you.

How about musteloids, the official link?

If you miss skunks (mephitidae) being mustelids I would be very happy to introduce you to grisons :D

Red pandas were also misclassified under the musteloid family Procyonids because they strongly resemble raccoons, members of that family. Thanks to DNA, we recognize red pandas as of the Ailuridae family in Musteloidea. There also used to be just two to five mustelid subfamilies, now there's eight.

Hard to tell between plenty musteloids in general and we misunderstood them historically - skunks were once classified as mustelids due to their squat bodies, strong claws/teeth, and the scent glands. Recently we learned skunks are the most basal family of Musteloids, known as the Mephitidae.

That photo is hilarious, the marten looks so devious.

I have a grison as my main fursona, same family :)

And then nature said give this weasel a honey badger costume, make it a little bit bigger, and add partially webbed feet. The grison was born.

Cute! Fishers were once classified as martens, but they're now in their own genus, Pekania.

Yeah I'm shocked they didn't add weasel and ferret emoji

A greater or lesser #grison and a striped #skunk fell in love.. a skunk and #mustelid hybrid was born later! Just #joking. This is not a strange Musteloid anomaly. This is the striped hog-nosed skunk from #CentralAmerica. It's a pure #Mephitidae (skunk) family species! My favourite skunk species..
