re: yes, i know i can’t catch a break

through an error on the state's part that i am currently in the process of appealing (ugh), i am potentially ineligible for health insurance for the rest of the year.

if it sounds like i'm panicked, you're right; i take a medication that i very badly need to survive and it's about $450 with goodrx ($1400 without). big pharma woes aside, i need more meds soon and have no way of paying for them.

here's where you (maybe???) come in. you have a poetry chapbook manuscript. you want feedback on it. i will do that for the low price of $50 per manuscript for up to 9 people to offset the cost of this prescription.

this portion of my lore predates my migration to bluesky, but basically: wrote a chap of ekphrastic poems based on sounds from a sound map, it got published, the publisher ghosted a really absurd number of authors, and then A Moonlit Café decided to revive a few of them as a bundle

i have a lot of questions

what do you do when the abyss stares back? what do you do when you no longer have a joker origin story, but a joker origin trilogy? why are my feet so firmly planted on broken earth?

why was i bred during the years where the world kept inventing more ways to break your heart? what would baby blonde me in a polyester plaid jumper say if i tell her my first love and i used to fight in public online? that i’d never have met my college partner if not for an anonymous question on my blog? that i’d lived with someone who started out a stranger on the internet?

does the moon change phases in the night, sometimes? is it possible that the waxing crescent i saw when the sun first went down has swelled up before my eyes so minutely that i’ve just noticed it now? whether or not this can happen to the moon, can it happen to other things, like people you used to love?

when you take a picture of the moon on your phone, you know how you can never capture the craters or glow the way they actually look? do you know that everyone i’ve let love me has shied even further away from my camera than the moon? do you think that’s why no one has ever believed i could choose wisely, that i didn’t have anything to show for it? is it stupid to compare a lover to the moon, knowing he’ll never be as graceful, as silent, or as steady? is it worth letting anyone see my collection of pixelated photos of a shadow blurred with moonlight?

will the internet be what breaks the earth, in the end? can the internet break your heart, too?

i chewed and spat first communion in the same gutter
from which i graduated carefully choreographed
processionals through oil-slicked puddles in kitten heels
and floor-length white gowns baring crooked teeth
at curious schoolboys peering into the cage
here stands a deserter a feeble lamb escaped
from split-rail fenced pastures shepherded by
handwritten holy tomes maps drawn on old receipts
shoved into apron pockets scattered like ashes
on beaches or mosquito welts on stocky thighs fresh tracks
forged through thickets of humble black oaks
[upon reaching the clearing we happen upon molehills
and burrows with intrepid steps and rolling ankles. we
sprint onward, certain that this is only momentary.]
there is comfort in chaos in variables for which
i can never solve in days or weeks where i long for
the splendor of a silence that wilts like a vase of cut freesias
after one hour’s time pleasure without the company
of far more pain is a futile fiction

does anyone else hear the music from dig dug as they inch
closer and closer to their limit? no, just me? okay, well,
i’m there, in the tunnel pumping pookas full of hot air,
and i realize i’m wedged in a corner between boulder and fire
breathing dragon, defenses downed. i only know dread
from dreams, from the lurch of stomach as body catapults
south through the sky. until i wake, i lie suspended in death.
in the morning, i pour hot water over prickly pear tea,
cupping my lidded mushroom mug as a substitute for human
warmth. the sun rises over my series of jagged tunnels,
cut across bedrock all serpentine. the ground paints green
over dirt, tunnels obscured by the early spring crocuses. yes,
there are so many crocuses.
