I love Glastonbury tor also, yes ! It’s very similar, although if you do go, perhaps don’t do it after Sunday lunch like I did to work off the roast potatoes. I practically rolled back down to the car 😂

You’re going to love it! Make sure you visit Bourton-on-the-water also. If you want a recommendation for the best roast dinner I’ve had in my life- check out the Boxing Hare in Chipping Norton- it was fabulous!

Another shot of the door at St Edward’s, Stow-on-the-wold.
The church door at St Edward’s, Stow-on-The-Wold.

Supposedly inspired Tolkien’s writing of the “Door of Durin” from the Lord of the rings (although this is not authenticated, but he was known to visit stow in particular)

The church resides on the site of a Saxon church and these two ancient yew have grown against the doors for centuries, their roots embedding themselves naturally framing the arched stone door frame. Above, Are stained glass windows with ornate tracery, in reds and blue. A wrought iron lantern hangs above the door which lights up the Cotswold stone in the evenings .

This door is highly popular in stow and heavily photographed by Tolkien fans in the summertime, so I visited on a early morning during a rain shower, and got a good few moments to appreciate the church and the churchyard on my own. Highly recommended a visit to stow if you are ever in the Cotswolds!

St Edward’s Church, Stow-On-The-Wold
The memorial of Royalist Captain Hastings Keyt, St Edward’s Church, Stow-On-The-Wold. He died approximately at the age of 24 in one of the last battles of the 1st civil war in stow.

A black stone slab on the floor of the church. The inscription is contained within a circular carving, framed by skull and cross bone Momento Mori. Above, is an impression of what he looked like, also with decorative circular framing. He is depicted having long hair and what appears to be a wearing a suit of armour.

Inscription:
Sacrae Memoriae Inclurissimi ducis Hastings Keyt Filli johannis Keyt de Eberington agro Gloucestriensi Armiger wigorniae cohornum ex parte regis praefecti in praetio juxta Stow 21 die Martii 1645 occisi

Sacred Memory of the Most Honorable leader Hastings Keyt, son of John Keyt of Eberington in the county of Gloucester, officer of the King's Worcestershire forces, killed in a battle near Stow on the 21st of March, 1645

Hello again friends. I’m back. Went and did the Tolkien door thing, it did not disappoint.
The ancient doorway in St Edward’s Church, Stow-On-The-Wold. A gravestone leans to the left of a pathway, where cow parsley grows wild against the church wall. The ground is littered with yew needles. Further along the path is the church door, framed with gnarled yew trees. The trees seem to be almost as if they are growing into the walls. Above the church door is a lantern light. beyond the path, a lush green lawn can be seen and some leafy green trees.

Sorry I’ve been absent. Winter blues I think. Hope everyone is well and enjoying the run up to Christmas celebrations! The dark mornings are taking it out on me I fear !
A narrow, wet footpath runs through a small wooded footpath, leafless trees arch overhead, their dark branches tangled against a grey, misty sky. Fallen brown leaves cover the ground on either side of the path. A row of streetlamps lines the walkway, casting a warm yellow glow that reflects off the damp path and fades into fog in the distance.

St Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, London, Uk.
A weathered stone memorial in St Mary’s Cemetery, Kensal Green. The monument features a sculpture of an angel kneeling in prayer, her head bowed and wings folded gently behind her. She holds a small bouquet of flowers in her hands. The angel is framed by two carved stone pillars supporting a triangular pediment engraved with the name GANDOLFI. Beneath the angel, a dark marble plaque bears an oval ceramic portrait of a man, now faded with time. The surrounding graves and greenery, along with a cloudy sky, lend a peaceful atmosphere to the scene.

#31DaysOfGraves Day 31: Memento mori (Latin for "remember (that you have) to die"); symbols or tropes acting as a reminder of the inevitability of death. The most common motif is a skull, but other motifs include a coffin, hourglass or wilting flowers to signify the impermanence of life. #Edinburgh

The last day of #31DaysOfGraves 31: memento mori. These symbols seem to be very common here in Scotland. Here are just a few from Stirling and Northumberland. Thanks so much for sharing all your pictures. I've really enjoyed seeing them. Thanks too to @annaandthedead.bsky.social for organising! 🎃👻🎃👻
