I would never Though the original Metroid Prime is probably a very good game, as it was the basis for the demake, just not my kind of thing, so me saying the fangame is better is more telling my preferences than anything else

Finished Metroid Prime Origins yesterday; it took me around 10 hours or so. It's a 2d demake of Metroid Prime; it's a great metroidvania, a great 2d metroid game, and since I hated playing the original for the 30 minutes I did, it's better than the original IMHO. One of the best games of the year

Someone just reblogged this on tumblr with this tag and I just fucking died I've been on this shit for over a decade and it's only getting worse

written about this before but whatever.

Videogames as an artform have a problem with nostalgia. Not that people shouldn’t have nostalgia. Or that games shouldn’t draw from the past. But instead the weight we give to nostalgia.

When people go back to enjoy old games, we assume it’s a nostalgia thing. Do people assume that with books? Or movies? Or music? People certainly do go back in time with those mediums for nostalgia! It happens! I know when my sister is listening to certain cheesy old boyband pop or punk she’s often having a musical nostalgia trip! That’s cool! But we still don’t ASSUME, CONSTANTLY thats why people go back to stuff.

People like old stuff because it’s cool and interesting. It’s historic. People go watch Metropolis still, but how many people alive could even be nostalgic for a movie like that?

I almost want to see the word Nostalgia excised from discussions about video games – not because nostalgia is bad but because we over use it to the point where it’s actually harmful I think.

I mean I made IWBTG and am making an NES style game right now and even for me, the obsession with ‘nostalgia’ seems crazy.

Old stuff is cool. I know this because I see a lot of you kids on my tumblr feed talking about games I know you didn’t grow up with. It’s like finding your parents record or CD collection. Thinking the primary greatness of old games is bringing back memories of eating cereal and playing games on a saturday morning is a great injustice, even if those memories for some are perfectly worthwhile things.

I think I leave game making to you, I'd rather play them But I like the visuals already, so that's a big win in my book. If it is fun to play, then I'm happy

funnily enough, Game Boys were known to survive many things that would kill more modern hardware outright. I've seen Game Boys that survived fires and still worked

I heard this somewhere, that the older a technology is, the more likely it is to survive even longer. Stuff written down in books, e.g., has a much better survival rate than anything written on the net. So games whose code is written down in some musty old magazines will probably survive the longest

As someone who loves RPGs and doesn't mind grinding from time to time, I hate the infestation of RPGs with only scripted encounters in the genre. Most good RPGs are balanced well; if you encounter too much grind, that's on the devs not doing their job well, not on the systems not working

You can’t even comprehend how important Eien ni Hen’s work is to the fan translation community. Romancing SaGa, Fire Emblem, Sakura Wars, Tear Ring Saga, Glory of Heracles, Dragon Force II, Dark Half, Beyond Oasis, Psi-O-Blade, Arabian Nights, and so much more. What a loss. Rest in peace.

Upcoming combination of idle game and dungeon crawler. I do enjoy both genres, though whether this works really depends on how much of either genre is in the game store.steampowered.com/app/5307400/...

That's great to hear, but their Steam page is kinda like the first thing people see when they stumble upon their project. Even if they hide that some of their art is created with AI, it's obvious and not declaring it as such is deceptive and will lose them possible customers.

For someone who says they are against AI, quite interesting to see them working for a studio that clearly uses AI pictures on their Steam webpage

you cant trust game devs to have good opinions about video games. theyre too busy making video games to play any video games so theyre uninformed.

I'm excited to see Mega/Sega CD Shadowrun get a translation (it's still a bit WIP in places, and keeping fingers crossed it's not AI), but I will say manage your expectations that this is the best Shadowrun game now playable. If you enjoy visual novels, you'll get more of a kick out of it.

At a time when its seemingly impossible to escape AI slop art, its always a treat to discover art by someone who can create entire worlds that linger with just a simple picture. Wish I had the money and capability to create an entire dungeon crawler in this artstyle

I think Breens point is a bit simplistic, even if there's truth to it. People aren't just gamers, readers, movie nerds or whatever, they have a variety of influences and hobbies, and even if they were impacted by past gens of creators in their chosen form, other experiences have shaped them as well

Another roguelike dungeon crawler. I wish devs would stop this, dungeon crawlers of this type mixed with roguelike level generation never works. Crawlers need hand-crafted dungeons to work well
