With the 30th anniversary of @suedehq.bsky.social's Coming Up album, I thought I'd write a widescreen review of the record. On how they transitioned from the loss of Bernard Butler to create a pop pastiche of themselves. A concept album about Suede itself.

The death of a 16 year old girl in Sydney last week should lead us to some greater introspection about modern sexual culture. But I suspect it's all too difficult for us to confront.

A big shame if this is the case. In Australia if someone said they were a Laborite, a Liberal, a National or a Green you would assume they were an elected MP for that party. No-one else would ever call themselves this otherwise.

Grant Wyeth @grantwyeth.bsky.social · 11/05/2026
Yeah, but no-one "class themselves" after a political party. It's akin to giving your soul to one. And it's why Americans are so nuts right now. My theory is that it is due to the registering of party affiliation when registering to vote.

So odd that Americans call themselves "Republicans" or "Democrats". No-one else makes a political party their identity like this (it would be incredible weird and cringe in Australia). And it leads to things like this where people try to project a party identity on to you.
