Hello Earthlings it is Granny Anarchy! The October issue of UMAmi is not quite ready in print yet, but you can access it online from ANYwhere - you don't even have to be in OKC! This month I've written an essay about Indigenous Peoples Day. Edited in the zine, longer by itself 🎃👻🧟🐺🧛‍♂️🕸️🐈‍⬛🦇☠️🍬🍂🍁
Screenshot of the cover of UMAmi 340, which has a skeleton against an interesting background that looks like foliage, draped shroud fabric, and wood with maybe bright light or snow, and also the first page of an essay on Indigenous Peoples Day discussing the problematic history of Christopher Columbus.

The September UMAmi is out! I reviewed an night at Resonant Head with local bands Photocopy, Powdr & Colliding (plus their recorded music.) Bonus: my usual ramblings! Read at issuu.com/metrolibrary... Unedited article at issuu.com/metrolibrary...

Negative Creep: A Personal Recollection of Grunge
By Granny Anarchy

Intro: Aero Zeppelin
The 70s were a tumultuous, tempestuous time in music and culture. External crises and changing social mores were reflected in glam rock. Significant acts and venues were born and died. But by the early to mid-80s, some hardcore bands had taken the rawness of punk, added metal elements, and were even further influenced by indie musicians with unique sound structures (Pixies) or noise elements (Sonic Youth.) The time had come for a new "Verse Chorus Verse."

Part 1: About a Girl

As a member of Generation X, I lived through the change and believe I remember it accurately. The end of the 70s and early '80s were fairly bland. Disco seemed lush and escapist but lacked much substance. Pop was mellow and smooth. Rock was bombastic, and even harder rock seemed cliched or recycled. That left punk or new wave, which got progressively more packaged, palatable, shiny and sanitized in a faintly alarming push for futurism.

There was a Cold War threatening nuclear annihilation if our nation offended what was then the USSR.

Germany was still divided by a wall. We'd not yet seen the full benefits of anti-pollution legislation or anti-smoking campaigns (most of us were still smoking indoors in restaurants, malls and bars - it was an ashy, butty, smelly world). We had a plethora of issues - such as AIDS, homophobia, and systemic oppression ... which had kept many people closeted, cowed ... [in] poor or actively harmful circumstances.

So when sax-y, bright, big-haired pop songs danced through the zeitgeist in teal, neon and hypercolor, we craved alternative voices. And that's largely what we called them. Sometimes we referred to "college rock," because college radio stations played the things we wanted to hear. Remember, readers - this was before the internet and before people had computers in their homes or phones in their pockets We had the radio...

Rebel Rockers

by Granny Anarchy

America250...Freedom 250... America's birthday celebrations seem to be confusing this year. But most people can agree that America annually acknowledges its independence from England. Some time later, America and England birthed rock and roll, then the punk movement. In the past Granny has profiled several notable figures in music, so I'm hoping not to repeat myself. Instead, I'm offering overviews on British, Irish and American artists who encapsulate the "Spirit of '76" (to quote The Alarm) who "shook the world" and got themselves some independence, carved out a future with their bare hands despite a life that can be "cruel and so unkind." I am especially highlighting those who, at the same time, made the community better in the process.

Fiona Apple pledged two years of royalties from media use of "Criminal" to assist refugees via the While They Wait Fund. In 2020, the fund reported $90,000 had been donated. Also in 2020, Apple pledged two years of media royalties from the song "Shameika" to The Harlem Children's Zone and narrated a 2020 video to educate immigrants about ICE. In 2021, Apple began volunteering for Courtwatcher PG, led by formerly incarcerated Black women.

Alice Bag's determination helped shape the early Los Angeles punk scene. The daughter of Mexican immigrants, Alice was bullied for her appearance during her school years. She grew up listening to Bowie, Queen, Mexican ranchera, and soul. Alice co-founded The Bags in...(Partial) article by Granny Anarchy in July 2026 UMAmi:

Jarvis Cocker of Pulp penned the lyrics to the British working-class anthem "Common People". In addition to being the only consistent member of Pulp, Jarvis writes and acts. Although some of his life choices may be questionable in hindsight, he has consistently backed pro-Palestinian causes for over a decade.

Evan Greer is a transgender activist and writer as well as musician ... Greer fought for net neutrality and the release of whistleblower Chelsea Manning. She has recently campaigned against surveillance capitalism and bathroom bills.

Grace Beverly Jones worked as a renowned model before ... settling on an avant-garde, post-punk style. She pursued a career in acting and has been a muse, icon and inspiration to many. Her bold, androgynous style has been influential in explorations of gender expression and identity.

Love her or hate her, Courtney Love's independence ... made significant impact in music ...

Patricia Morrison formed The Bags with Alice Bag in 1977, leaving a year later. She's most known for her time in The Gun Club (1962-1964) Sisters of Mercy (1986-1989) and The Damned (1995-2005), Her resilience has made her an enduring goth icon.

Sinéad O'Connor was an Irish singer and activist. In 1992, O'Connor famously tore a photo of Pope John Paul II on Saturday Night Live to highlight and protest the Catholic Church's involvement in and cover up of sexual abuse. O'Connor was passionate about child abuse, human rights, racism and women's issues.

I'd hate to include anything touching on United States independence without a nod to the original residents of this land. The Dead Pioneers' frontman Gregg Deal is from the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe. His lyrics blend punk sensibility with indigenous pride and resistance.

Bob Vylan is a British punk rap duo whose lyrics focus on homophobia, racism and sexism. Bobby Vylan and Bobbie Vylan speak against issues such as the war on Palestine...

Please welcome the June Edition of UMAmi. Online soon - look for at all OKC metro libraries and partnering locations such as independent bookstores, coffeehouses, and music venues! issuu.com/metrolibrary...
A sliding stack of May and June UMAmi zines (Oklahoma Underground Music Archive's free monthly zine) open to Granny Anarchy's article. Editors titled it "Talking about our G-G-G-Generations(s)" - it overviews how recently generations have been pitted against each other instead of highlighting each other's experiences. This month's UMAmi also features cool stuff about Pride, media recommendations, our usual gig calendar and roadie questions, and more! We'd love for you to read!

A lot of frustration today despite some success. Tried to Be Ethical & copyshop print my perzines (so expensive!) Cheapest I could do was $0.50/page @ library. Each side = 1 page. Made mistakes, cost a lot in ACK BAD PRINT JOB & CRAP BAD PAGINATION. Out 70.00. Not many zines for Fest in June.

Some of the other zines (and stickers) at Library Out Loud last nite 🎶📰✨🗣️🎧🌈🌟🎶
Assorted zines and stickers in an ARTFULLY ARRANGED scattering on a table. The zines are small folded titles such as "Make a Zine" though there is one special performance zine from No Moore. There is a sticker from Oklahoma Music Archive and there are some fun DVD movie spine labels such as "this movie is terrible" with a confounded raccoon on it.
