This katydid from Ecuador has been affectionately named by photographers "candy-cane katydid". The truth is... we are not sure which species it is. One possibility is a Harroweria nymph, but until someone witnesses the transformation into the adult stage it will remain a mystery.

Fun fact: If someone quotes a post of yours in a way that is unwelcome (as is commonplace on Twitter/X) there is a tool to combat the unwanted attention. Simply click the three dot menu on the quote post & click "Detach quote". This removes your post from their quote post. Useful to know, do share!

Fairy Helmets Alight
A close-up photograph captures a cluster of Scarlet Fairy Helmet mushrooms (Mycena strobilinoides), standing like tiny forest lamps among a bed of pine and fir needles in Mt. Hood National Forest, Oregon. The mushrooms feature vivid, flame-like orange caps with a smooth, almost glossy texture that appears to glow in the soft forest light. Each cap is slightly rounded and delicately scalloped around the edges, creating a delicate, ethereal look. Their slender, bright orange stems rise gracefully from the forest floor, surrounded by the textured remnants of fallen needles, twisted twigs, and pale lichen.

Known as Scarlet Fairy Helmets or Flame Mycena, these mushrooms are particularly admired for their brilliant color and striking appearance. This species is common in North American forests, especially in mountainous areas at mid-elevations. They grow in small clusters or scattered groups, often among conifer needles and mossy patches, adding unexpected vibrancy to the forest floor. Scarlet Fairy Helmets have gills with orange margins under their caps, a distinctive feature that sets them apart from other Mycena species. These mushrooms are saprotrophic, meaning they play a crucial role in decomposing organic matter, breaking down the needles and other plant debris to enrich the soil.

Although beautiful, Mycena strobilinoides is considered inedible due to its small size and fragile structure. However, their role in the ecosystem as decomposers makes them essential for forest health. This cluster of Scarlet Fairy Helmets adds a pop of color and a touch of whimsy to the otherwise muted hues of the forest, with each mushroom standing as a reminder of the intricate and often unseen processes that sustain the forest environment. The vibrant orange caps contrast beautifully against the earthy tones, bringing an almost magical ambiance to this serene woodland setting.
