My 2025 in film (5/5): Saddest rewatch of 2025 was "A Man From Nowhere" (Lee Jeong-beom, 2010). RIP Kim Sae-ron. First Lee Sun-kyun and now Kim Sae-ron. South Korea, please fix this toxic celebrity culture that's literally killing your leading lights.

My 2025 in film (4/5): My 2025 first-time watches top 10. So many of my non-2025 viewings were rewatches that the top 10 list is almost the complete list of non-2025 first time watches! Tilted towards dad-movies, but "Linda Linda Linda" was an easy number one.
Screenshot of the movie tracking site Letterboxd, showing the movie posters of my top 10 ranking of the older movies I saw in 2025 for the first time.

My 2025 in film (3/5): My 2025 releases top 10. Am certain "Anora", "28 Years Later", "Mickey 17" and "The Phoenician Scheme" would have featured had I caught them.

My 2025 in film (2/5): Started with a rewatch of "12/12: The Day" (Kim Sung-soo, 2023) - a historical movie is doing something right when you're so gripped you forget you know historically how it ends. Squeezed in "The Devil To Pay" (Lane & Ruckus Skye, 2019) just before 2026

My 2025 in film (1/5): A terrible performance for me this year, just desperately short of time to watch films. Last year I screenshotted my first and last watches - this year can fit them all in
A screenshot from the website Letterboxd showing the movie posters for the 53 times I logged watching a movie in 2025. That is too many to list here, but should be available in accessible form at the URL https://letterboxd.com/graememcc/year/2025/

Glasgow Film Festival just started, and has been good to me thus far. And to be slightly mean, because you often make me jealous when tweeting what you've been watching 😃 I'm going to reciprocate with a sneak preview of some of my next watches!

"Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang" - classic Shane Black "Lone Star" was a last-minute decision to go watch the 4K restoration of a movie I'd never heard of when it was showing at Glasgow Film Theatre. Bought the bluray the next day. "Phantom" - I love me some Japan-occupation set Korean period capers.

My 2024 in film (2/3): My 2024 releases top 10. Saw very few 2024 releases. "Love Lies..." might rise on rewatch - some guy brought 4 kids into screening (WTF?) who chatted noisily throughout, taking me out of movie. "Jericho Ridge" only released in UK in 2024, so counting it

My 2024 in film (1/3): Started out with rewatch of Zhang Yimou's frosty spy movie, ended (literally - credits rolled 5 minutes before midnight!) with @vycevictus.bsky.social favourite: as he puts it, a 3-star movie with 5 stars worth of entertainment.
A screenshot of a portion of my stats page for 2024 on the movie-tracking site Letterboxd. It shows the movie posters for the first, 50th, and last movies I watched in 2024.

They are as follows.

First movie watched: Cliff Walkers (Zhang Yimou, 2021) (rewatch)

50th movie watched: Joint Security Area (Park Chan-Wook, 2000) (rewatch)

Last movie watched: The Beekeeper (David Ayers, 2024)

Finally watched Phantom (2023, Lee Hae-young) after blind-buying the bluray from Korea. Loses a bit of magic once it exits the hotel setting, but still top-notch pulpy fun. Trailer: youtu.be/8E-6lXi8-wk
Still from the 1933-set Korean movie Phantom (2023). In the shot, we see female character Park Cha-kyung (played by Lee Ha-nee) through a cafe window. She smokes a cigarette whilst looking out the window. The poster from the 1932 movie Shanghai Express is reflected in the window.Still from the 1933-set Korean movie Phantom (2023). In the still, the character Kaito Takahara (played by Park Hae-soo) shelters behind a wall, pistol in his raised, red-gloved hand. He is sweating, his Chief Guard's uniform is dusty, and he has a bandage on his right cheek.Still from the 1933-set Korean movie Phantom (2023). In the shot, we see female character Park Cha-kyung (played by Lee Ha-nee) driving a car, one hand on the steering-wheel, whilst another cradles the head of another character (I'm not revealing who, as that would be a spoiler for the movie). The car's windscreen has a bullet-hole. In the background, the direction they're driving away from, flames and soldiers can be seen.

Apropos of nothing, “The Man Standing Next”, “12:12 The Day”, and “1987: When The Day Comes” are great South Korean movies based on true events (I’ve listed them in historical order). Could also make the case for “Hunt” (between 12:12 and 1987) and Kingmaker (after 1987)

And I forgot to add the tags #LetterboxdFriday and #LastFourWatched. Of course I would mess up my first post on Bluesky. Anyway, wanted to say I still think about this amazing shot in Motorway
A still from the 2012 movie Motorway (director Soi Cheang).

The shot is from a high perspective looking down a hillside at night. Hence, most of the frame is dark shadow with little distinguishable, though the shape of foliage can be seen towards the top. The edge of the hill is clearly visible, running in a more or less diagonal line from the top left-hand corner. Behind the hill, the high rise buildings of Hong Kong appear in dark blue hue. Near the bottom left of the screen, there is a small area of illumination: it comes from a sports car snaking it's way up the winding road on the hillside. The car, and the very immediate surroundings are lit by the headlights of the car.
