They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

Another thing that I feel is important: world states. In humans, “Thought” often employs multiple imaginary world states to solve problems. Khaneman called this the “Simulation heuristic” but I wonder if this has cognitive implications for those with aphantasia

That’s one of my favorite books! And agreed on substance, but not on syntax. Distinctive terms matter especially in regards to safety. Especially in the midst of “AI air traffic controllers” www.nytimes.com/2026/09/18/u... so vote to call system 1 as “intuiting” and system 2 as “thinking”

F.A.A. to Roll Out New A.I. Tool for Washington Airports
The tool, called SMART, will crunch scheduling and weather data to predict and avoid delays. It will be deployed in the Washington region’s three major airports next week.

And that’s an important capacity and lacking that is not meaningless.

Rather, it only ever does anything in that auto-pilot sleep mode, it doesn’t appear to switch to the more effortful “manual” reasoning we employ for lack of experience.

Yeah but different humans will handle the same problems with various different kinds of effort. Some one who has never typed has to hunt and peck, and an experienced typist can “do it in their sleep”. Right now LLM’s can only do something well if it can do it in its sleep

In conclusion: I am reticent to risk debasing “thought” to accommodate *current* LLMs. They may still lack fundamental capabilities that we employ in ourselves.

With LLMs, I often feel like I’m talking to a very experienced expert on subjects who has lost the sense of unfamiliarity that provokes full on “thinking”

Mind you, this definition of thought excludes a whole host of human behaviors. We humans CAN think, but a lot of us do not. We often do the same things that LLMs can do: intuitively react and respond to stimuli.

As in “no, LLM’s do not think” What I know of LLM’s and transformers tell me that they are essentially very practiced intuition machines. Thought requires reflection, comparison, switching context and perspective and what I’ve seen of LLM’s tells me that they can’t do that yet

Eva Fortune🏳️‍⚧️ @gradientwitch.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
I don’t know if LLM’s think, and that is because I do not know two other things: 1. What is the structural basis of “thought” ( as opposed just experience or intuition) 2. Do current LLM’s have that structural basis Based on what I current understand of thought and LLM’s, I’m leaning towards “no”

Furthermore, there is a deep Christian formulation to all this that argues that the only way a “bad” person can become “good” is through Christ

Eva Fortune🏳️‍⚧️ @gradientwitch.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
I largely agree with you here. In my experience, the main thread is a firm belief that 1. Some people are intrinsically better than others. 2. A good society is one that promotes the best and punishes the worst.

Sometimes, fantasy novels be like “Life was never easy for John C. Whorebottom, but that was true for all who practiced the ancient art of magical prostitution.”

I think the thing that makes music theory so…weird is how it’s math but shackled to centuries of “traditional thinking” that was there before it was formalized into its current form. Kinda like timezones and calendars.

Maybe, now that I think of it, this is why fascism, racism, bigotry comes up inevitably when leaders are influenced more the wealthy than by the people. Once the rewards and punishments for those in power are no longer coupled with the general welfare, they lose any incentive to protect people

Nazi’s exploits a flaw in liberal norms to legitimize acts of violence by first appearing civil to liberally minded leaders and then demonstrating that hurting the marginalized doesn’t threaten their power. “See, that didn’t hurt did it?”
