Proud to announce that my story "Orders" from Augur Magazine @augursociety.bsky.social will be in this! I am so happy that more people will get to read about my little robot.

My main takeaway from today's errands is that I can think of few things less badass than having a window decal that says "BADASS" on your Volkswagen Jetta.

It used to be that you could get free city maps lots of places (CAA, town halls, etc), often quite good ones. I bicycled from London, Ontario to Montreal once with a stack of paper maps. It wasn't difficult. (Not the map-reading part anyways.)

Surprised to see anti-AI graffiti on Gardiner's Road the other day.
A concrete overpass on which "NO A.I." is spray-painted in black

These people should see the unhinged emails I received for my Sailor Moon fanfic in the 90s.

I was seventeen, I knew edible flowers were a thing that fancy people ate sometimes, there was a bowl of leaves and flowers on the table that in my defense was IDENTICAL in shape and pattern to the bowl the soup was in, and I dutifully served myself a heaping forkful of the decorative centrepiece.

There's a "no right turn on red" sign on my corner and the drivers still edge up into the crosswalk while the light is red. Like sir this is accomplishing nothing for you, you cannot turn now, why do you feel compelled to go one extra metre forward just to sit there through the whole light cycle

There's something oddly fun about taking my morning shower and then immediately going outside to dig potatoes. Yes, I am once again covered in dirt, but at least it's fresh dirt.

To the market I bring my wheelbarrow, empty. I follow people back to their houses, gardens, schools, quiet green spaces; I carry flat stones, plants with roots wrapped, groceries, small children. What I have is me: arms, legs, back, breath. I'm lucky to be strong; I share my fortune.

Just finished James L. Cambias' "The Ishtar Deception" and it's a delightful space opera romp. It's sort of like if you mixed the Culture books with John Varley's "The Golden Globe" and I was about eight times more cheerful when I put it down than when I picked it up.

Oh yes. We wash the fleeces in the back garden so the runoff water goes into the flowerbeds; it makes such excellent fertilizer.

I saw this little Chinese jade deer in the British Museum and it looks very sweet. Like I would trust this little guy if I met it in the woods

M.R. Carey's Pandominion trilogy; I picked up the first book at the library because I liked the cover, and they are so so good. Currently waiting for book 3 to come in at the library (only one person ahead of me in the queue, hurrah!)

Last night I dreamed I was back in high school and the teacher got mad at me for something and made me count from 796,913 to 803,913 as punishment. Possibly the most boring dream of my life. Shoutout to the version of Ms. Gabourie that lives in my subconscious, I guess.

Canadian arts and culture folks: the federal government has launched a (methodologically flawed) survey on "the Cultural Sector's readiness for Artificial Intelligence". If you're ready to resist or refuse genAI, here's your chance to let them know. pch.research-recherche.ca/f/s.aspx?lan...

So excited that my dear friend Emmet A. O'Brien has released his first two novels this week! This is really thoughtful space opera, friends. I've read further in the series, and I'm so excited that some of you can now read them too and discuss them with me: www.amazon.com/dp/B0H3JCNPS...

ME: hold up. you see that? train's been through here
FRIEND: how can you tell
ME: tracks. they're not fresh, maybe 60, 80 years old
FRIEND: no chance it'll come back, then
ME: don't be so sure. That's well within their lifespan... and they're highly territorial

What amazes me is the ones trying to submit AI crap to short story magazines. That's not even a get rich quick scheme! That's a get two hundred dollars six months from now scheme! (Realistically it's a get banned from submissions for life scheme)

(To be clear, I don't mind doing it, but I'm not all that good at it; I wouldn't have picked a job that is mostly staring at a computer in my house if I were comfortable dealing with people. I try my best, but I wish they had better friends to help them.)

I wouldn't have predicted how often as a copy editor I end up listening to authors sobbing on the phone because their book is about to go out into the world and they're scared the past few years of their life will have been meaningless if it fails. Emotional support is more of the job than expected.

Google AI just straight-up lied to me about the location of the World's Largest Beet. Truly we are in the dumbest timeline.

Yeah, definitely. I edit a lot of French speakers and they frequently make certain systematic errors: pluralizing adjectives, for instance ("writing on the blanks pages"). Whereas chatbot text is just this weird scattershot array of issues.

Sometimes I think about how nice it would be to be a factory-fresh robot so I could be entirely encased in the shaped packing foam they use for fragile electronics. It seems like it would be really relaxing.

Fund every minority language initiative I can find. Early education programs, bilingual street signs, book/video publishers, a bunch of linguistics grad students to go round remote villages with recording gear - every endangered language gets every possible chance to be preserved.

One of the exceptions is that the signs on buses telling you to move back say "A little further please" so that people don't vandalize "farther" with a sharpie in the obvious way.

Were 90s kids clamoring for a Batman cartoon with 1930s Art Deco aesthetics? Is that what the market demanded? Or did some really smart creative people have a vision and make a genre-defining hit that sustained 20 years of TV shows? If you want success look for vision, not just metrics.

Once again I am reminded, just slightly too late, that when combining a bunch of dry ingredients plus oil, all the dry ingredients can be dumped into the sifter together but the oil really should not be.
