This is the correct framing from Jake Sherman. Although he could have added “and ensure security lines at airports stay as bad and probably get worse.”
MIDDAY: HOUSE GOP LEADERSHIP DECIDES TO CONTINUE DHS
SHUTDOWN

This is a strangely phrased announcement from Speaker Johnson, but if it’s true, then the FL-2 district, currently held by Rep. Dunn, may need a new member of Congress before the end of the term.
An X post from Jake Sherman that says “NEWS: @SpeakerJohnson told a room of GOP donors at a party retreat in Florida that Rep. NEAL DUNN (R-Fla.) may have a terminal diagnosis, according to multiple sources present.
DUNN, 73, has said he will not resign before the end of his term. He is not running for reelection to his strong GOP seat in the Florida panhandle.”

You might be wondering why these texts aren’t enough to make the GOP party leadership send Gonzales packing. @steventdennis.bsky.social tells you (on X):
The House is presently 218 Rs, 214 Ds w/3 vacancies. Speaker can afford 1 defection if all lawmakers vote. Thomas Massie exists.
If Gonzales resigns, it would 217-214. Speaker could still afford 1 defection but would not be able to also have an absence.

We have corrected an error in the original post brought to our attention by the reaction of some Senate Democrats’ to the murder yesterday of Alex Pretti: www.govtrack.us/posts/570/20...
We have updated this post to more accurately describe the differences between H.R. 7147 and H.R. 7148. Initially, we we failed to note that 7148 also contained provisions funding the Department of Homeland Security (just not Border Patrol or ICE). This has become relevant since, after the murder of Alex Pretti by DHS agents in Minneapolis yesterday. Saturday, January 24, a number of Senate Democrats have indicated they will not vote for any bill that includes DHS funding. Since both 7147 and 7148 contain DHS funding, if enough Democrats refuse to vote for both or if the Senate creates new versions which fully separate DHS from other agencies, then that would mean there would be a partial government shutdown because the House will not be in session again until after the continuing resolution expires this coming Friday, January 30.

We're at the Capitol today meeting with folks who care about making Congress a transparent and more technologically modern institution. Here's Speaker Johnson making opening remarks.

People often ask how many bills are introduced each Congress. You can look on our site & see Congresses 1-42 & 92-118. It varies wildly; has generally risen over time & 10,000+ is not unusual. You’ll see the total for each if you select a Congress to search. www.govtrack.us/congress/bil...

This is what I do, in this order, using your post as an example :) Go to the three dots on the right; select share; pick my app. That should work for any bill we post about here. If we haven’t posted about it on Bluesky, then yeah, browser it is.

Per Craig Caplan on X: 216-215: House narrowly approved the rule for the Senate changes to the 2025 GOP budget resolution, allowing for floor debate and a final vote. 3 Republicans Massie (KY), Spartz (IN) and Turner (OH) joined all Democrats in voting No. The budget resolution itself is next.
Screenshot of final vote totals showing all Democrats and 3 Republicans voting against the budget resolution debate rules. It passed by one vote anyway.

Per Sahil Kapur on X: SCALISE: "This bill doesn't even mention the word Medicaid a single time." The budget resolution doesn't use the word. It tells Energy & Commerce Cmte, which oversees Medicaid, to find cuts of $880 billion. Republicans openly say spending less on Medicaid will be part of that.
(4) COMMITTEE ON ENERGY AND COMMERCE.—
The Committee on Energy and Commerce shall submit changes in laws within its jurisdiction to reduce the deficit by not less than $880,000,000,000 for the period of fiscal years 2025 through 2034.

If the House Ethics Committee never releases its report on allegations related to now-former Rep. Gaetz, the allegations will remain listed on his page on GovTrack forever. (The alt text only covers the paragraph bc too many chars; see link) www.govtrack.us/congress/mem...
In March 2021, The New York Times reported that the Department of Justice was investigating Rep. Matt Gaetz for allegedly engaging in a sexual relationship with an underage girl. Over the ensuing weeks the allegations expanded, and the House Committee on Ethics opened an investigation into it as well as allegations of using illicit drugs and accepting an impermissible gift, as well as other allegations that were dropped in 2024 (see timeline). In 2023, the Department of Justice announced it would not charge Gaetz. However in June 2024 the Ethics Committee announced that it is still investigating those allegations (sexual misconduct, illicit drug use, improper gifts) as well as special favors and obstructing government investigations.
