Maybe examine why you feel a burning need for an inviolable cultural wall to prevent yourself from looking that direction. Maybe the person desperate for cultural protection of their identity isn’t the one who wants equity; it’s the person who only feels safe by maintaining disparity.

For gay marriage, the line I found most useful was: if you don’t want gay marriage, just don’t get gay married. If you don’t feel an attraction to a given trans person, don’t date them. Meanwhile, let folks who want a gay marriage and gay men who DO have the hots for that trans man go for it.

I feel like part of this is the human need to perceive difference and categorization as qualitative rather than organizational: if X and Y are different, clearly one of them is ‘better,’ a notion that I think works counter to the utility of categorization.

My annoyance with internet parlance is often less about its existence and more about its presumed universality. Taxonomy is useful because it’s explicitly not universal. It’s okay that some stuff is just ‘content’ as long as other stuff can be ‘art’ or ‘smut’ or ‘rant’ or ‘poetry.’
