In 1993, "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" made a Black man the star of a major sci-fi franchise and his character was like the Platonic ideal of a loving father, a great cook, a man who uplifted others, who was kind and tolerant but MILITANTLY so, and who also had flaws like any other human.
