Sadly, our Invisible York tour guide Gemma Dean died in May. There is a remembrance service being held at Carecent on Friday 3rd July at 1pm. If you’re unable to attend, then there’s also a memorial train planter upstairs at Spark, which you’re free to visit anytime.

Building on their community-led research to promote community wealth building and ensure residents' voices are part of local strategy development in the heritage city of York (UK), @goodorgcic.bsky.social have launched a new network: Community Tourism UK. More info: www.communitytourism.uk
Partial screenshot from www.communitytourism.uk showing a text based logo containing the capitalised words: 'TOURISM VOICE' in orange and with the letters 'OUR' and 'VOICE' highlighted in blue. A small orange north-east pointing arrow positioned after the word 'VOICE' completes the logo.

The following text is displayed below the logo: 'Community Tourism UK is the national alliance for community-led tourism organisations across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. We support initiatives that promote regenerative destination management and champion the voice of local residents in shaping the visitor economy.'Partial screenshot from www.communitytourism.uk showing the text 'Our Declaration' in bold black above the following list of statements:

Tourism as a shared benefit
Tourism should create broad value for society, combining economic vitality with cultural vibrancy, social inclusion and environmental regeneration.

Communities at the centre
Residents’ wellbeing, identity and aspirations must guide tourism development, recognising their role as the custodians of local destinations.

Innovation and digital transformation:
Data, technology and digital skills are essential to strengthening resilience, sustainability and competitiveness across the sector.

Respect for culture and heritage
Our cultural and natural heritage must be safeguarded and celebrated, supporting continuity, creativity and local traditions.

Strengthening nature and society
Tourism should actively enhance ecosystems and support fair and meaningful livelihoods across the tourism sector.

Tourism as a force for peace and understanding
Travel should foster empathy, solidarity and cooperation, reinforcing the values that underpin our work.

In August, we worked with York Civic Trust to highlight historical trailblazers who’ve shaped the city. Our industrial tansy beetle sculpture (described as ‘a skip’ by one resident) celebrated 64 Luddites who were tried here in 1813 for protesting against the machinery that threatened their jobs.
