On 26 December 1936 the first contigent of American volunteers sailed from New York to fight in the Spanish Civil War. The previous day — Xmas day — they were gathered at the Yiddish Art Theater on 2nd Avenue (now Angelika East), used by the CPUSA-affiliated Jewish People's Fraternal Order (JFPO)
