Ugh I posted a comment on an Ask Reddit thread that asked “What did you learn from COVID-19?” It was taking off and someone gave me an award, and then the moderators deleted the thread. I’m reposting it here because I was proud of what I wrote

My response:

I learned a lot about how poorly people understand what our government is supposed to do for us and how people react when governments fail. I think the Trump admin response to COVID was a catastrophe, yet we as a society have not held him accountable for how badly he fucked up.

Pandemics, when they first start, spread by exponential growth curves. That means that every decision you make in the early weeks and months after a new pathogen is discovered has huge consequences.

And the Trump administration made every bad choice. There was no cooperation with China and the WHO. There were no tests, no equipment, no effort to track the disease and contain the spread. In fact, they actively worked AGAINST testing, which Trump said he didn’t like.

Response continued:

That meant Covid spread unchecked and all of us had to deal with it as individuals. We were hopeless in the face of their incompetence. Whatever governors, local public health officials, and mayors did in the absence of coordinated federal action was never going make that much of a difference in a global pandemic.

Any other administration we might have elected in 2016 would have at least tried to learn from past pandemics. They would have looked at the pandemic preparedness handbook that Obama left them. They would consider why something like SARS or the Swine Flu didn’t explode like COVID did. And they would have taken some of those actions. While that may not have stopped the pandemic, it may have slowed it down. It may have been more localized. It may have saved lives. Maybe we could have actually tested enough to keep life open in some cities where rates were low enough.

But no, instead, we ignored or forgave Trump’s incompetence and directed our anger at all the other actors downstream of him. And we elected him to fail us once again. It’s a disgrace.

Something that this article does not mention is that the FTA lost about 30% of its staff at the start of 2025, resulting from DOGE and Russell Vought’s assault on the the federal workforce. This surely impacts the speed at which these projects are reviewed, evaluated, and approved

I wish this "speed cameras are cash grabs" trope would die. We have recent studied in the U.S. showing that after an initial surge in ticketing, fines decline as behavior changes and people speed less.

As I’m not a fan of them I’m all for leaving Cash Generating Camera’s off the list, wait sorry “Speed Camera’s”. Bike Lanes like c’mon in urban areas they work pretty well if planned out properly.
