i just wanted to change my nitro typing indicator but on second thought that would be a really funny trio of emoji to set it to

ive never really known his work but regardless i think i feel if you’ve got this stuff in your history either be upfront with it, or just don’t go into politics or other public figure spaces. you don’t have to be broke and homeless for what he did but also you don’t have to be internet famous either

i thought it because they priced items 95 cents. so you'd get a nickel back.

lol yes i think it even came up a couple of times (mostly between sync and myself) but i'm not sure if we ever loaded up superheroes arena. i played a bunch of the q1 mod back in the day, it was cool! we were prototyping stuff a couple of years before OW was announced but sometimes thats how it goes

sponge @goodass.dog · 23/09/2026
hahah that wasn't my doing but i love there are vanity pieces of both in there

if the full game never got off the ground, we were gonna release it as a big quake live update, but fortunately it did! the quake live prototype is a lot closer to the final design than you'd think, although ranger just had basically a big jump instead of an orb. but anarki was basically 1:1.

for all the complaining about characters and ultimates, the secret of quake champions is it's just an evolution of the holdables in q3 and the runes in team arena. QC started off as a prototype in quake live where we just redistributed those pickups to characters, and gave them physics changes.

happy to see QC get its big farewell update too. quake champions was always my favorite quake gameplay wise. i'm also proud to say i came up with the name (and pushed against calling it quake world haha) and the design of athena's hook was my one big brained game designer moment!

honestly hard to blame him, that's a pretty sweet hole in one

i do think bungie can manage destiny 2 updates and marathon updates with a team of 500. split them in 2 and that's 250 people a team, that's bigger than id was at its biggest! i assume most of the d2 unvaulting is a lot of grunt work and tech work and not so heavy on art. this seems doable

you could balance it by getting mad at your phone screen instead

i unironically think orig doom is more fun to play on a controller, and the skill i lose because of it is minor enough that i don't care

lol i'd occasionally userbenchmark's comparisons for CPUs. i was always confused by their rankings and whatever the hell efps means. but recently i noticed this insane FAQ in their footer and its done more to make me realize how bad of a resource they are than if they had just shut up

damn, fuckin fantastic. what a wonderfully positive thing to see come out of this never ending wave of closures and layoffs

sponge @goodass.dog · 31/08/2026
this rules, was this just organized by some ex-company folks? considering it's been a couple of years what a crazy big turnout

civvie is great and very kindly chatted with me a bit after I thanked him for what he said about the layoffs after his last vid. his latest video covers dawn of the machine and it’s great to see he is mostly positive about it because MG really outdid themselves with this one

wrote a lil thing about agent 64 on backloggd. its fine! it needs more, and it needs to not copy the bad parts of the game it is inspired by. but it still feels pretty fun to play. backloggd.com/u/spongeh/re...

just me on the id side, and our producer in Maryland were hit by it. i do believe the machinegames mappers are still at the company. i am absolutely happy for y’all to enjoy it especially since its a free update but def understand the emotions. appreciate the support!

sponge @goodass.dog · 08/08/2026
it is appreciated! i still definitely wanted to see this make it out because getting cancelled at the finish line helps no one. i don’t expect microsoft to care about me so being able to chat with everyone at quakecon playing it is extremely fulfilling

now im curious, was it map5: requiem, i just absolutely love this space, all the rooftops and crossings, and then all the distant background connected buildings, and then you get further and it's even taller with even more levels

sponge @goodass.dog · 07/08/2026
hopefully it ended up living up to the initial excitement, i need to do a full playthrough but i think it's a step above the original DotM gameplay wise, and just some incredible environments. one of i think czg's maps in the middle i just had to noclip and float around and just stare at

negative to say about id and zenimax through all of this. but most of all, don't feel bad for me, but do feel angry for me!

gotta say i was definitely a little bit choked up to see it pop up on steam and then seeing the trailer for the first time. it sucks it had to happen this way, it didn't. these layoffs were completely a choice. but i'm still thankful for all the folks i worked with on this, and i don't have much

the two last things i worked on were released/announced today. the 30th quake update with dawn of the machine, and the evercade doom port. the quake update also includes an id vault with a lot of in development quake material, almost all of it seen for the first time. www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Uf4...

fwiw the markers over invisible enemies is either bug, bad luck, or intentionally misleading. i played through that scene and that didn't happen. the game does pop those up to help you clean up the last few goons, which i'm fine with. i don't need to be running around looking for the last dork.

In response to the unprecedented number of game developers laid off this year, we have created a bundle on itch to benefit a Game Industry Hardship Fund, managed by @videogameworkers.bsky.social. More than 100 games for 10+ bucks! Please share widely and donate generously! itch.io/b/3802/game-...

this looks a bit too in depth for what i've seen, but i used to help run a site, pocketgamer.org . what you see there now is i believe actually a squatted domain. they took a wayback machine scrape of the front page and added all sorts of casino links presumably for SEO reasons.

the john goodman link is likely because the designer of pyst was the founder of en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fir... which john goodman was a fan of. i'm not sure why i spent so much time trying to learn about pyst one night, but i did.

sponge @goodass.dog · 27/07/2026
i recently discovered that after pyst, parroty would go on to make x-fools, and microshaft winblows 98. on the writing team for those games was brian posehn and patton oswalt. just absolutely bizarre stuff.

i've used fb purity for facebook, it completely removes every post that's not directly from your friends in the home feed. for me it removes 80+ posts and leaves only like a dozen posts that were directly posted by friends. there's definitely extensions out there.

as my joblessness continues, i've now spent like 2 days configuring a new neovim install from scratch. the only way this could get more dire than recompiling the linux kernel with a patch, is if it were emacs instead. but maybe i'll become a weird neovim guy!

it is (was) really exceptional how many people credited on 2016 were still there when TDA/revelations shipped. there's always some amount of turnover after any big game ships, but it was rare to see that much of the team stay together.

The timing of this kind of press is intentional. How are they going to make these games when Bethesda and Obsidian collectively laid off hundreds? Don’t fall for it.

update: patching the linux kernel actually fixed my issue (i am one of those weirdos using a bc-250 turned into a gaming machine, look it up if you haven't heard of it is weird as hell!)
