"Reveal yourself, creature!" I'm so proud of this one. As usual, it started as a pose study and then... it seems like I've draw my first comic page. I can't wait for my Masters to finally end next year so I can work on TTRPGs again. This time not only as a graphic designer, but also as an artist.

Man, DC is on fire these days. I've been following Absolute Wonder Woman and Absolute Martian Manhunter (this one will end on December next). Both of them very solid and good titles. Now I'm excited for "The Demon", the new Etrigan comic to finally arrive here in Brazil next year.

I've read the news that someone used AI to reverse engineer Adobe suite products and released all of them bootlegged versions for free this week. I truly believe "software piracy powered by AI" can trigger the imminent death of gen AI. More than any perfectly reasonable argument against it.

It makes me believe most people would be totally fine with all the horrors we've been trough in the last two centuries if it happen again today...as long as it happens in a place far away from them. There's a casual nihilism in the air. People seem to feel happy to feel nothing.

Lately it's been very difficult to talk to people on why I'm against Gen AI. They quickly end up agreeing this technology is making everything worse in a planetary scale and then...they just admit they don't care about it enough. How can you argue with someone that accepted their own doom?

As the world of corporate work gets worse by the day, most of us don't have time for regular sessions anymore. Unless your target public is mainly formed by high schoolers, a medium-big campaign should be designed as an anthology of interconnected one-shots.

We, as TTRPG authors, should design more games that record, preserve and expand the memory of niche cultures.

Am I too crabby to think rad aesthetics aren't enough to make a good poster? I see a lot of really cool posters online that simply don't communicate a thing beyond "look how cool I look". wasn't the whole idea of designing posters to bring attention to events, causes or products?

The more I study and dive deeper into knowledge the more I feel lonely and isolated from my own reality. Maybe that's a common feeling from people who get real deep studying for too long. I must confess it's kinda sad. You end up in a very empty place. Bittersweet.

Next year I'll probably focus on anatomy and perspective and pose drawing... So I depend less and less on references (at least for the thumbnails phase).

I still believe it's possible to get things printed and not cost you an arm. I see non rpg printed stuff being sold all the time on the indie art fairs in my city. All we need is to find a common ground. Not fancy hardcovers and not cheap ms word file.
011
Gontijo @gontijo.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
It's like there's no middle ground: or you get a cool but extremely expensive book, or you get a bare bones black and white Microsoft word file 😄. I can't believe it's not possible to have a cool and yet accessible TTRPG printed product. I mean, 36 to 48 pages would already convince me, if cool.

Ajuda...

Gontijo @gontijo.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
For a book to sell good in Brazil (like 3k copies in an year) You can't depend only on leaving it on a marketplace and talking about it on social media. You'll need to sell it in events. Work. You'll need to talk about it on big podcasts. Work. You'll need to DM it in convetionS (plural). Work.

"but BW art doesn't brings value to the product" said the publisher with yet another high fantasy RPG with generic vanilla fantasy illustrations that looks exactly like every other mobile game. - I feel there's a lack of a marketing plan combined with a disproportionate expectancy of selling it.
130
Gontijo @gontijo.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Usually this is the result of editorial decisions that doesn't take the target public financial reality into account. You could get this book production really cheaper just by saying "let's print the inner pages BW only, no color illustrations". Also lay it out in A5 to get more books in the end.

I honestly find the TTRPG book prices prohibitive in Brazil. Don't get me wrong, I know book production is expensive as heck these days. I'm an editorial designer afterall. But see: a non-rpg book usually costs around 50 to 90 bucks here. Crowdfunding rpg books are like 250 bucks. C'mon.

Much respect to all illustrators out there. Drawing cool stuff is unbelievably hard. It takes a lot of time to draw what you would call a mere sketch of a very simple idea. I can't imagine how long it takes to get to a professional level. Years and years of uninterrupted practice.

In a certain way, you can say solo TTRPGs are gamified worldbuilding. The player's agency through the PCs is a tool not only to explore the fictional world, but especially to create it while doing so. I find it exciting and dive deeper on it down this thread (with a solo dungeon design example)

Can you see how the dungeon exploration is a ballance between the rolls and my own personal insights? It's like when the players ask you things that are such interesting ideas that you give up your prepped ones and follow their lead. The adventure became essencialy table-emergent.

Gontijo @gontijo.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
I roll it with advantage because the probability of that to be true is high. Now let's assume the oracle answered me "NO, AND", it means "negative with consequences": while I'm investigating behind the wall rugs the center of the room floor starts opening and the sound of dialogue comes from it.
100
Gontijo @gontijo.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
The sound of machinery combined with a room that has no machinery at all brings some interesting possibilities right? Maybe there's a secret passage to a lab behind one of the rugs on the walls. That idea would be interesting to explore so I ask the oracle if the sound gets louder near the rug.

Gontijo @gontijo.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
Notice how the dungeon design is built on uncertainties here. You can't possibly know the actual size of the dungeon before exploring it, but you know it's not that big (based on rumours?). Maybe 6 to 7 rooms plus the entrance hall, maybe less.
100
Gontijo @gontijo.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
Let's say you're in room 1 and there's a small spiral stair going down to what seems to be room 2. Before going down, you ask the oracle if you hear something coming from downstairs: "YES, BUT" The sound of looping rythmic machinery. You get to room 2, roll it and it's empty, no machine in sight.👀

Let's design a dungeon for solo ttrpg together: - Size: The dungeon has Ud6 rooms That means every time you advance a room you roll a D6 and if the result is 3-6, you roll a table to specify its shape, length and what you see on a first sight. If the result is 1-2, the dungeon is now Ud4.

To follow that interesting idea WITHOUT consulting an oracle is different from cheating. Actually, a lot of times these ideas will complicate more your characters life, but they're too good to ignore. Too much info you'll fall on a railroad. Too less and you can't move at all. Find the balance.
