@sci_burst I'm just getting into the solarpunk episodes, just as the season seems to be over. If you ever come back to the theme, I'd love to see a discussion on most solarpunk places in the southern hemisphere. A year ago i wrote a nomination of why i think […] [Original post on ecoevo.social]

@natematias There is a lot of mileage around base rates. I wrote a toy model on a similar AI detection problem in ecology. You use AI to detect pest species and trap them. We'd expect AI to have some chance of errors, the consequences of which depend on base […] [Original post on ecoevo.social]

The new Casey hut in Arthur's pass national park Aotearoa. Solar panels to right and rain water collection system to left. As is normal in a DOC hut, a chatty collection of randoms passing around a bit of cheer. It might as well be #solarpunk .

I wanted to share a paper considering unintended consequences of using #AI in ecology. We link pop growth and ai performance. We use an example of traps that use AI to selectively "remove" undesired species like rats. We then show how this can damage […] [Original post on ecoevo.social]
Figure from paper with caption: A major management concern in Aotearoa is the control of invasive mammalian predators such as Ship rats (Rattus rattus). (B) Control of predators can have unintended consequences including harm to native species such as the Weka (Gallirallus australis). (C) Existing control measures are designed to mitigate these unintended consequences such with this trapping tunnel designed to mechanically exclude Weka. (D) A new generation of traps such as the AT-520 AI uses AI to selectively target pest species. The consequences of this advance are currently unclear.Chain of events where improving our ability to detect rats unintentionally damages populations of other species.

Wan, et al. "Functional coexistence theory: Identifying mechanisms linking biodiversity and ecosystem function." Ecological Monographs 95, no. 3 (2025): e70033.FIGURE 8 Applying functional coexistence theory to a plant
competition experiment. We parameterize our resource competition
model and identify drivers of pairwise community biomass using
experimental data: Wedin and Tilman (1993) competed two grass
species, Poa pratensis and Agropyron repens, across a soil nitrogen
gradient (horizontal axis, all panels). Detailed methods are given in
Appendix S1: Section S6. (a) Fitting the resource competition model.
After determining R and monoculture biomass of Poa (blue dashed
line) and Agropyron (orange dashed line) from single-species
growth, we fit our model to the plot-level equilibrium biomass of
each species (points) across the soil nitrogen gradient. Model
predictions (solid lines) capture the shift between Agropyron and
Poa as nitrogen increases. (b) effect on yield. Using the
fitted parameters, we quantified transgressive overyielding (black
line) as the difference between the communitys biomass and that
of its highest-yielding species (Poa); we shade the portion of this
curve where the outcome was coexistence without transgressive
overyielding (gray). (c) Niche and fitness components. We show the
predictions of functional coexistence theory ,
calculating the range of fitness ratios (vertical axis) that would
allow transgressive overyielding (green) or just coexistence (gray)
across the nitrogen gradient. The solid line shows the actual fitness
ratio between the species; the dashed lines show the three
boundaries as in Figure 7b.

Powerpoint has... of course removed the option to turn off its "AI" slide suggestion. I know what i'll be talking about in my next lecutre and what autogenerated design I will use.
Ugly slide design of:
"you've been asked to work with a new staff member"
-Claims to be superintelligent
-Interrupts frequently
-Can't be relied on to tell the truth
-Does not take no for an answer
-What do you do?

I will watch with interest. In Christchurch/Otautahi New Zealand, I see google maps giving bad directions as well. In this neighbourhood there is a beautiful bikelane connecting these two locations. Google maps instead recommends a four lane stroad, with no protected bike lane.
