Dust 1935 - 1936 Bernarda Bryson, American, 1903 - 2004 lithograph on wove BFK Rives paper
This print shows a man from the chest up, facing the right. The man has pale skin, a straight nose, thin, partially open lips, and short dark hair peeking from under a flat cap. He is dressed in a collared shirt and what look like overalls with a jacket over them. He is positioned near the bottom right corner of the print. In the background on the left, there is a rural scene with scattered wagon wheels, overgrown grass or hay, and a wooden fence. Behind those objects, the top of a structure resembling a windmill or another tall building is visible. The setting appears to be in an open field under a cloudy, gray sky.

TANAKA Ryōhei(田中良平 Japanese, 1933-2019) Kamo Road 1994 Copperplate etching with aquatint
A breathtaking masterclass in monochrome precision, this 1994 copperplate etching with aquatint titled Kamo Road showcases the extraordinary technical virtuosity of the renowned printmaker Ryōhei Tanaka. The composition is an intensely detailed, contemplative study of nature's winter or early spring geometry, capturing a quiet moment along the historic Kamo River landscape in Kyoto.

Tanaka’s signature command of the etching needle transforms a stark, minimalist landscape into a dense web of rich, organic textures. Dominating the right side of the print is the massive, textured trunk of a mature tree, which Tanaka has rendered using thousands of microscopic, stippled etches and aquatint tones to give the wood a rugged, tactile mass that feels firmly anchored in the earth. Rising from this main trunk, a complex labyrinth of leafless branches spreads gracefully across the upper register, with a line weight that tapers with staggering precision from thick, muscular boughs to a delicate, hair-thin tracery of winter twigs silhouetted beautifully against the stark, open sky.

Injected into the negative space on the lower left is a dynamic, swirling flock of tiny birds mid-flight. Descending from the lower branches, the birds are captured as crisp, minimalist V-shaped silhouettes that introduce a beautiful sense of sudden movement and seasonal rhythm into an otherwise silent, frozen landscape. Below the main canopy, a secondary line of smaller, softer trees recedes into the distance along the invisible road, their branches overlapping to create depth through atmospheric tonal gradation.
