Went for a walk in the woods and found some great mushrooms. Really like the red/orange agaric. Wonder if it’s a pH thing that controls how red they get.

I might have exported all the assets from Minecraft Dungeons 2 and make a java resource pack.

Do I need to make paper cutouts of ore blocks for 1 min segment about copper and ore? No, but here I am.

Visited a banded iron formation which had a fault in it that was filled with pyrite. I know where the iron came from but I wonder about the sulfur.

Working on the copper and gold episode. Draft visual for carbonate hosted replacement where acidic copper laden water is neutralized by moving through limestone and the copper is deposited in the rock. Usually malachite or azurite though, not the apparent native copper ore that Minecraft has.

Always wanted to talk about elemental abundances in the solar system / bulk earth / crust so I'm forcing it into the gold and copper ore episode. This is a draft display showing changes between crust and bulk earth for each element. The bars are log abundance change.

A year ago I made a video about mountain scales and I pronounced Mt. Kosciusko as the Australians do, and not in Polish. Imagine my surprise while visiting the royal castle in Warsaw and randomly seeing the literal heart of Tadeusz Kościuszko, whom it’s named after.

I visited the Wieliczka Salt Mine in Poland and I knew there was a lot of sculptures done in the salt but I wasn’t expecting a statue of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who did many things but also who the mineral Goethite is named after.

Cut up a piece of carbonate rock today that was mostly a mix of iron/magnesium/calcium carbonate but it also had some malachite in it. I like the mix of colors.

I’m working on making some real life Minecraft blocks for a video and decided to use chalcopyrite as a raw gold. It’s always shown as iridescent but that’s just the patina. The fresh surface is similar to pyrite and other sulfides. Let’s see how long it takes to change color.

Fun fact! Angry villager particles work well as impacts for a small scaled version of the Late Heavy Bombardment.

I’ve never planted rainbow chard before and was very surprised to learn the roots are also colorful. So cool.

Ha! I was right, the lichen spam in the revel seems to have been just a video presentation thing. You can get away with much brighter colors in the dark and still keep a distinction between blocks. The Java Snapshot today doesn't look like ketchup and mustard explosion.

I used some native sulfur that I collected in the Vintage Story video but since I’m going to be talking about it in a bit more depth when the Minecraft sulfur cave snapshot comes out, I decided to buy a flashier piece.

I wonder how much Mojang increased the lighting in the sulfur cave revel. You can tell they were doing some things with brightness past just the “bright” gamma setting in game. Maybe adding more glow lichen than normal just for watchability. The bright colors will look better in the dark

I have never seen something this color blue in nature before. I think they are shriveled up blue cup fungus. Also found some pixie cups and a beautiful hepatica leaf.

We used a lot of physical maps before the internet and instead of tossing them all, I haven’t used wrapping paper for over a decade.

Smithed is releasing a Community Direct tomorrow at noon (CST) on their YouTube channel. This will focus on upcoming datapacks and resource packs. I helped out with the event and maybe have a cameo. There is also a watch party on their Discord. www.youtube.com/@SmithedMC

Several years ago while working in Madagascar I came across these small floating plants. I sketched them and the Malagasy name was Ramilamina. When I got back home I learned the English name is Azolla and are actually ferns. They fix nitrogen, can double in mass in two days, and caused an ice age.

Very conveniently, Grand Teton's prominence fits perfectly into the max custom dimension build limit at 1:1 scale. I'm working on a video that was going to be quick but it seems I may be incapable of that. Its coming along and will be out soonish though.

I worked in Australian Neoproterozoic (1000-541 Mya) rocks for the month of July. But never really got into the Ediacaran formation, famous for early life. We did hike into rocks of that age one day and found two pieces of float with worm traces on ripple beds. Uncle Toby’s for scale.

These bell flowers are one of my new favorites. Such a nice purple color and the unopened buds have this great pentagonal shape. (Also I’m back from Australia and working on new episodes)

The last of the Gneiss Boxes sold quickly after the diamond and coal episode came out and I shipped the last of them out today! Thank you so much for everyone that bought one and I hope you enjoyed the loot. I rounded up the $2677 in profit to $3k and made the donation The Nature Conservancy today.

You always think of orchids being tropical plants and then you come across some pink lady slipper orchids on the side of a trail in the middle of Wisconsin. (Cypripedium acaule)

Radiolarians are another micro organism that produces opal skeletons. A rock with a high amount could be called radiolite. Radiolarian shapes are commonly used in sci-fi.

Went on a quick road trip to get some footage for an upcoming episode and stopped at Ableman’s Gorge near Baraboo WI. I was always impressed by these 1.7 billion year old ripples preserved in quartzite that are now a vertical wall. They were one of my early exposures to geology and deep time.

Troubleshooting an issue with our isotope ratio mass spec today. It’s always fun to see things that look like science fiction when you are doing science fact.

My new office light switch. It was made by the Wurdack Electrical Manufacturing Company and rated for 250V and 60 A. It only has 12V on it now to close a relay for the office light. I’m not sure how old it actually is, if anyone has an idea, let me know. #knifeswitch #normallightswitches

Look at what arrived in the mail today! I’m not really sure what I expected when I started doing this stuff but it’s all been incredibly enjoyable. I have plans for a lot more things in the future and I appreciate everyone that has watched and supported me over the last few years.

I spent new years day grinding out this build in my survival world. I am normally stuck in cool palettes when I build and I wanted to try something warmer. I'm happy with the results and its now the new house for the town clerics.
