“These books are a tribute to all the researchers,” writes Davnah Urbach in her review of “A Scientific Bibliography of the Far Northern Drakensberg” and “A Scientific Bibliography of the Waterberg, Makgabeng Plateau, Blouberg and Soutpansberg” by Rodney Moffett. Read on: bioone.org/doi/10.1659/...
The two book covers are shown side by side against a gray background. Both covers are taken up entirely by photos of landscapes in the regions covered, with the titles and the author name printed across the photos.

#Intern wanted! Bachelor’s or Master’s in (plant) #biology or similar field, comfortable with field work in gravel-bed rivers and holding a driver’s license? Our group Ecosystem dynamics offers a 6 month #internship: apply.refline.ch/273855/1831/... #ScienceJobs #RiverRestoration #STEMInternship
JobAd for an Intern in river restoration ecology/plant biology, 80-100% (f/m/d):
As part of a project on the connectivity of riparian plant species and their ability to establish under various flow regimes, we are looking for support in doing field work for seed collection, with greenhouse experiments where we grow selected seeds and with laboratory experiments using a flume to simulate plant resistance under various discharge conditions. The focus of your work will be the preparation and supervision of the greenhouse and laboratory experiments, including filling of pots and a flume with gravel and sand, as well as planting of seeds and juvenile plants. You will acquire knowledge on dispersal and establishment of riparian plants, the impact of river flow regimes on riparian plant establishment suitable for restoration projects, and gain insights into an interdisciplinary and applied research project on ecology and hydraulic engineering.
You hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in (plant) biology, environmental sciences, or a related field. You are interested in plants, you like to work in the greenhouse and to conduct laboratory experiments. You are comfortable with field work in gravel-bed rivers, can lift 2L pots with gravel and sand, and are physically fit for these tasks. You work reliably and conscientiously and are interested in interdisciplinary work (ecology and hydraulic engineering with a focus on river restoration). You have a drivers license (Cat B, valid for Switzerland,), speak fluent English, and you like to work in a team. Suitable candidates holding a Bachelor's degree could also connect the internship with a master thesis on the topic of plant resistance to discharge fluctuations (e.g. seasonal floods or hydropeaking).

Another issue is complete! Articles examine changes in yak herding in Nepal, challenges in implementing science–society interaction policies in mountain biosphere reserves worldwide, and topography’s role in socioeconomic development in the European Alps. Read the issue: bioone.org/toc/mred/45/4
Cover page of Mountain Research and Development, Volume 45, Number 4. The cover photo by Dipak Raj Rai shows countless pieces of chhurpi—a hard cheese made from yak buttermilk—stored on overhead racks in a dark room with an earthen floor, stone walls, and a black wooden ceiling. The room also contains a wooden chair, baskets, and various other utensils. The chhurpi was produced by a private dairy in Gatlang, Nepal. While the state-supported marketization of yak products has boosted some households’ income, it is simultaneously eroding traditional sustainable herding practices and causing environmental degradation, as shown in the article by Indra Mani Rai and colleagues in this issue.

Job offer: PhD in Dendroecology (f/m/d)
You will be part of a project aiming to empirically disentangle atmospheric vs. soil drought impacts on intra- and inter-annual wood formation, and mechanistically model drought constraints on intra- and inter-annual tree growth dynamics (https://www.wsl.ch/en/projects/sad-tree) based on a unique monitoring network of 44 forest sites in Switzerland spanning 10 years of soil moisture and atmospheric climate data. In this context, you will contribute to the establishment and analysis of intra- and inter-annual time series of tree growth based on dendrometer, tree rings, and quantitative wood anatomy (QWA).

You will be responsible for establishing improved empirical relationships of tree growth-environment interactions based on the long-term integrative Soil-Plant-Atmosphere-Continuum dataset (tree & stand traits, physical environment), analyzing: intra-annual water- and growth-related stem radius changes from dendrometer measurements, early-season wood anatomy related to water transport and rehydration, and long-term drought effects on growth using tree-ring widths.

You have a Master's degree in forest ecology, environmental sciences, or equivalent. You should have excellent analytical and statistical skills in time-series analysis, preferably in dendrosciences and/or tree physiology. Ideally, you are proficient in programming and handling of large datasets, and have experience with tree-ring methods. You are able to efficiently expand and acquire knowledge in topics relevant to the project. You have a proficient command of written and spoken English, are able to work in a structured, efficient and independent manner, and have a high level of team spirit and have good communication skills.

2/2 In their guest editorial, Jörg Balsiger, Anne B. Zimmermann, João C. Azevedo, and Dietrich Schmidt-Vogt not only present the issue’s articles but also reflect on different framings of innovation and propose considering it as a multidimensional, context-specific concept: doi.org/10.1659/mrd....
Innovative adaptive practices in mountain communities often emerge from local resource constraints and community needs, as highlighted by Zhou and He in their contribution to this issue. In Guangming village, Yunnan, China, farmer cooperatives have succeeded in enhancing creation of value added in the local walnut trade by establishing processing facilities, such as this drying facility, in the village. The photo by Weijia Zhou shows a man shoveling walnuts in the drying room. The nuts lie in heaps on an aerated wire mesh floor resting on evenly spaced-out wooden beams; some nuts are packed in mesh bags. The room has light gray walls and a ceiling made of wooden beams.

1/2 How can innovation contribute to sustainability in mountains? Articles in this focus issue explore the question from different angles, providing insights from China and various European mountain contexts and showcasing the diversity of the concept. Have a look: bioone.org/toc/mred/45/3
Cover of Mountain Research and Development Vol 45, No 3, with a photo by Gusztáv Nemes showing a henhouse made of mud, wood, straw, and stones to keep the animals cool, warm, and safe. It is fitted with a solar-panel-driven door that closes automatically at sunset to keep foxes out. This is an example of hybrid innovation—merging old and new technology—found in a mountain product value chain in Hungary that was among the many mountain product value chains analyzed in one of the articles in the issue.
