More than the whole 'I dream about being Liverpool captain' while simultaneously plotting an exit, this was why I was happy to see the back of him. Any player whose main trophy goals are individual rather than team can do one.

World feed commentator was calling him Ah-rah-ooh-hoe on the weekend, all four syllables clearly enunciated. Was totally bonkers.

The type who support him and his ilk will find ways to excuse this along motorsports lines of 'if you ain't cheating, you ain't trying'. These grifters everywhere are impervious to scandal because their support is more interested in punishing enemies than good governance.

@distancecovered.bsky.social made case on recent TAW Trends show that lineup against NEW was most attack-minded in PL history. Everyone bar the CB's is better with the ball than without. I'd also like to see a defend-first RB who can cover at LB if Bradley ever returns and lives up to promise.

With Szoboszlai deep in the box, Grav has to make the safe play, there's a lack of numbers in cover. I'm not that fussed about the defending, both goals are fixable with coaching and time. What worries me more is the lack of threat with 10/12 outfield players being attack-first.

My take is the first goal against was on him, the bad sideways pass. Second goal was absolutely not him, was just a total lack of aggression defending the counter by all 6 (!) players running with the attackers. First is a system problem, second is a player problem. Both can be fixed.

I mean, it's not like they haven't known since January where the massive holes in the squad are. Did nothing then, and left it all to the last minute now. Araujo and Munoz good business, but needed about five more of those, not this nonsense Barcola + RW saga. Still need RW, ST, DM, LB, RB...

What? 21-22 saw them play every game possible, close 2nd in the league and CL final, plus two trophies. 22-23 had the midfield's legs fall off, definite bad year. 23-24 saw a title challenge that didn't falter until the spring, plus a League Cup and a full rebuilt midfield. One awful year of three.

Nursing a hangover as he tries and fails to forget his wife and/or daughter, who died in tragic circumstances. He's difficult to get along with but he gets results, so his boss puts up with him. He's difficult to get along with but has a heart of gold, so his partner is loyal.

As a Liverpool supporter, heartbreaking stuff. It may be logical, but it's still a progression, and Bhatia/Mittal/Saverin/Bezos is still worse than FSG of now, which is worse than the FSG that bought the club. Wealth extraction is the only goal and that money comes from only one place: supporters.

Spot on. This plus absolutely no sense of a plan or even signs of one. Klopp had some tough years with big gaps in the side, but there was always a coherence to the play in the home stretch, a show of defiance and something that offered hope for the year ahead. None of that exists here, no vision.

9th place team in a historic tailspin, you mean? The problem is there is no sign of a plan to fix the issues. In Klopp's worst seasons, there were always signs of fight and a way ahead. This has been a steady slide with no adjustment, no plan, just a death march to the end of the season.

Has the charisma to lead a club as obsessed with their managers as LFC. Understands the Scouse self-perception and identity. Going undefeated, beating Bayern, and getting to a European final is not a 'modicum', that's huge. He was more tactically flexible and successful at Madrid than most think.

This management group is too pig-headed and high on their own supply to make a change mid-season. We go out to City in the FA Cup, maybe survive Galatasaray, maybe not, either way we don't get past the next CL round. And when we limp to 6th and they can't justify their choice, he goes so they don't.

Every time I watch, since about November, I'm convinced he needs to go. Then I spend the intervening time talking myself into the fact that it's not his fault that the side is imbalanced and a bunch of senior players have dropped off. But I think this one was the final nail. He's not helping.

My favourite was the world feed commentator saying Ekitike getting mugged wasn't a pen because there wasn't a shirt pull, but now saying that one also wasn't a pen. Good process...

Yep. We're on a family plan with Tidal. Not because of the nebulous 'hi-fi' streaming quality, but because they give more money to artists per play than any other service I could find. Music shouldn't be free, artists should get paid.

Vancouver fantastic to visit, but not such an awesome place to live. Great access to nature, but culturally it's dead. So many deserted flats owned offshore. Also rains non-stop from September to May. I lived there for 15 years, may never go back. Oh, and plastic pitch and club may move because MLS.

I used a service called Getflix that spoofs your location via DNS so you don't have to turn it on and off like you do with a VPN. Super cheap, too. Watched the Doubters to Believers documentary that way on the UK site.

It's the 'NOW IS THE TIME FOR PEACE!' to close a social media message announcing the bombing of a sovereign nation that really gives it that Orwellian twist.

Add me to the boycott list, though for slightly different reasons. Mine are Gaza and the criminal enterprise that has hi-jacked international football and calls itself FIFA.

What will help him is he's been the opposite of Ange, pragmatic in style and finding ways to work with the players he has. He's also charming, will buy him time. Similar to when Klopp arrived, the key will be feeling that things are improving. Spurs fans saw some genuinely awful football last year.

Back before Slot was even on anyone's radar, Frank was my choice to take over from Klopp. Have loved him at Brentford: humble, smart, overachieving. Spurs is a different mess, though, and the gulf between the ambitions of the owner and the ambitions of the fans will be hard to navigate.

Add us to the list. Visited Western New York last summer, it's possible that was the last time we'll ever go. Keeping trips at home or across oceans for the foreseeable.

Thanks, David. As someone who has struggled to be engaged by the extremely predictable racing this year, you've done this one justice. Listening to the French commentary and watching Papa Zarco is enough to soften the hardest of hearts.

There was an awful banner about Arteta at Anfield today, and every single LFC fan I know and saw online thought it was terrible. But I also saw dozens of Arsenal posts about it saying, 'typical Liverpool' etc. We hate each other while the sport is bled dry by the real evils of the world.

gmazza.bsky.social @gmazza.bsky.social · 11/05/2025
Haha, touché. I think we're all convinced all supporters of other clubs are unbearable because we mostly see the worst examples in this awful banter era. I will grant, LFC can be extra touchy, but the Hillsborough and poverty chanting still haven't stopped.

"All Liverpool fans". As if "all Arsenal fans" can't be tarred with a similar brush. Or maybe the ones that get selected are because they're going to wind people up and drive engagement? As if other supporters of big clubs don't think of their own as TMCOAF? Nice high horse to go with pearls.

It's a team sport. The trophy he wants is individual, the Balon d'Or. He's going to Madrid because he feels he has a better chance there. I wouldn't have booed, but I'm not going to get all high and mighty about those that do. Arsenal will do the same if Madrid does the same with Saliba.
010
gmazza.bsky.social @gmazza.bsky.social · 11/05/2025
Oh, put away the clutching pearls. First, vocal minority. Second, it's a direct rejection of the club as he's not leaving for money or trophies but to chase a Balon d'Or at a continental rival where there's lots of bad blood. Third, many ambiguous celebrations now seem antagonistic in hindsight.

gmazza.bsky.social @gmazza.bsky.social · 11/05/2025
Non-Liverpool fans being sanctimonious about their reaction to a player who has a) walked away from the club for personal glory, and b) made repeated celebrations etc. that appear intentionally antagonistic knowing what we do now. Right. I'm with you 99/100 times, Philippe, but not this one.

@holland-tom.bsky.social 's book, Dominion, does a great job showing how many of the things we take as self-evident truths are rooted in a Christian tradition. I'm most reminded of this when reading ancient works where their 'truths' and assumptions are so wildly different as to seem hallucinogenic.

gmazza.bsky.social @gmazza.bsky.social · 26/03/2025
And I should clarify, I have extremely happy memories of his time with the club, and the teams he has been a part of. I'm not burning a jersey, etc. But if he comes back to Anfield in white on a European night, I fully expect the Kop to boo him deaf, and I hope he gets absolutely clattered by Endo.

gmazza.bsky.social @gmazza.bsky.social · 26/03/2025
Of course it isn't, he's free to leave. But supporters are also free to dislike him for that. Consensus seems to be he's leaving because there's a better chance of winning Balon d'Or in Madrid (he said he'd rather win that than team trophies). That's not a player I can think of fondly.

Going to Madrid *is* shameful for a kid of his background. It's not like he grew up in South America dreaming about La Liga. He's free to go for the money and trophies, but Liverpool supporters are also free to hold him in absolute contempt. He's a rat among the likes of Sterling for me.

I hate this so much. Imagine F1 doing riding mower racing as a support class? Barstool racing? What started as a novelty race in the US has attracted far more attention than it ever deserved.
