New working paper: the Norwegian wealth tax was a huge success. The "exodus" of wealthy people never happened (less than 100 individuals left). Tax revenue increased by 71.5%. No changes in business activity or investment. www.nber.org/papers/w35854
Taxing Entrepreneurial Wealth: Evidence from
Norway, 2021-2025
Marius A. K. Ring
WORKING PAPER 35854|
DOl 10.3386/w35854
ISSUE DATE October 2026
Whether imposing higher taxes on business owners adversely affects business activity by constraining investment and inducing capitalist flight is a central question in the ongoing debate on how to tax the ultra wealthy. To shed new light, I exploit a series of related Norwegian reforms during 2021-2024 that increased dividend tax rates, removed migration-related capital gains tax loopholes, and nearly doubled the effective marginal tax rate on business wealth. These reforms spurred international debate and, allegedly, an "exodus" of Norwegian billionaires (Financial Times,
2023). While I document clear effects on migration, these responses are concentrated among the top 0.1% of the wealth distribution and mostly confined to 2022 and 2023. My results indicate that at most 100 individuals left due to the reforms. I find no evidence of significant outmigration or reduced inflows of startup founders or inventors. I estimate that absent any outmigration, wealth tax revenues would have increased by 75% from 2021 to 2024. Reform-driven outmigration lowers the revenue gain to 71.5%. My findings further show that outmigrating owners' firms remain economically active and do not reduce investment. In a broader set of analyses, I examine whether business outcomes are affected, regardless of whether owners outmigrate, since firms may reduce investment both due to liquidity constraints or distortions to owners' savings decisions. I compare firms owned by Norwegian individuals subject to the wealth tax with firms owned by foreigners and other tax-exempt entities. By merging historical ownership data from Orbis with the Norwegian shareholder register, I perform these analyses on both Norwegian and foreign-domiciled firms.
Across settings, I find no evidence that Norwegian-owned firms pay out more dividends or invest less after the reforms,…

Currently reading Buehlman's The Blacktongue Thief, which is more fantastical, slightly more sharply written, and has some of the best snark I've gleaned from a page. Oh, and it has a war corvid - A crow the size of an elk. A great read so far, as of 1/3 into it.

Gave it a go before it got it's oiling. In order from the left is 1mm balsa, 0.5mm styrene, 3mm XPS, and the cardboard sleeve a copy of White Dwarf came in. I tried it on 5mm balsa but the blade deflected a little. It is a dull blade I snagged from another tool so need to recheck with fresh.
A top down shot of the assembled strip cutter sat alongside some strips of material it was used to cut with. The cutter was set to an arbitrary cutting width, and the cut strips are roughly 4mm in width.

The material of the strips is, with thickness, 1mm balsa, 0.5mm styrene, 4mm XPS foamboard and pulped cardboard with a glossy cover that came as the sleeve of an issue of the White Dwarf magazine.

Behold the Dark Souls-level half-lap dovetail on this bastard thing. I knew it needed some joinery to resist the stress of twisting sideways on an end-grain joint, so: dovetail. Half-lap and off-centre because of where it sits on the cutting head: below the dovetail is where the blade is lowest.
A close-up photo of the rather small half-lap dovetail joint from above, that holds the rail body to the receiving part of the blade head.A close-up photo of the rather small half-lap dovetail joint from the side, that holds the rail body to the receiving part of the blade head. Attention: Relax those cheeks! We're past the squeaky bum stage, and are fully glued up. I'm mostly hand tools (small workshop space) so working on such small pieces has been quite fraught, because I have no great way of work holding, and most of my tools are for general scale woodworking 😅
A layout shot of the fully-assembled and glued components of the strip cutter.

These components consist of:
- a utility knife blade (not Stanley, apparently! Doh!),
- two washers,
- two smaller machine screws,
- a threaded hand-tightening knob,
- the blade head featuring magnets and registration pins to hold the blade in position,
- the cutter rail that the blade head is screwed to with the two smaller machine screws, that slides in and out of the carriage, with a long slot running down the centre of the rail that the larger, captured carriage machine screw sits within, and is locked down in place with the threaded knob and two washers. The distance from the cutting head to the carriage fence is the width of the strip the strip cutter will make (from 0mm to 70mm, and;
- the carriage with integrated fence which features the central runner channel that the rail sits in to slide in and out and has a larger captured, threaded machine screw that runs within the centre slot of the cutter rail. At 90 degrees to the carriage slider is a fence that registers against the side of the material to be strip-cut. The fence features an inset area that the blade head sit within to achieve <4mm cuts, and allows for the cutter to be “zeroed out”A photo of the blade head with the blade installed against the two registration pins, and the “female mating surface” (Jesus, what a term! I am so sorry) of the cutter rail that receives it.

Once the blade is carefully in situ, it is screwed to the cutter rail with machine screws that clamp the blade in place firmly.A photo of the blade head installed upon the cutter rail. The blade sits at an angle for clean, slicing cuts, and to wear only one half of the blade, which can then be turned over once dulled to begin using the fresher, unused half of the blade.A top-down photo of the fully assembled cutter, showing the blade head in place upon the cutter rail, and the rail at a “zeroed out” position against the fence of the carriage.

Update for the shorter house, I decided on trying a version of a lime-ish render, which is a mix of PVA, pre-mixed plaster, and very fine sand. The exposed brick trim detail, the windows and door, and the roof moss are all still to be finished.
