Think they'd say "Minimum viable product" these days. 🙃 This really is pretty bad tho.

Yep, and there's at least a couple of other new ones these days, Hitachi have a plant in the North East, and Siemens in Goole...

4. Bideford feels a no brainer but always nice to have a stretch goal 🙃 Ilfracombe possible if you can find a way round or through Braunton maybe? If they did the SWR switch, id suggest also building a spur to Chard also to terminate the other service (plus the loop needed at Cranbrook...)

3. Current thinking seems to be along electrifying some places and then using battery, wiring the main line and Exeter core (say Crediton to Pinhoe) would probably get you a long way - it'd surely perform better than an asthmatic 150 anyway.

2b. Were I the fat controller I'd be looking at sending any 158s coming off lease to Salisbury and letting the Oke and Barney axis become part of that operation. That would save paths through Central, give some interesting through opportunities and give a good basis to develop it further.

My takes on those bits btw... 1. Will get sorted in time, as you say few options sat around, and the main reason we have the issue is that things were left sat around! 2(a). I don't think you can change frequency much without getting into major changes elsewhere...

It will be fascinating to see what does or doesn't happen when this at least visually becomes a central government problem in December.

It's a beautiful part of the world to visit, & the RhB is full of fun stuff and beautiful scenery. Most (not all) flows got segregated on the north AC end when they got a lot of new MUs with autocouplers, but the DC line south to Tirano i think will be mixed train capable for a few years yet.

There's at least one place I know where it does work, but: 1. It's a place where "chuck it on a truck" is physically difficult 2. It's very limited quantities 3. A place where train speed is a thing, but not the only thing 4. It must cost the local govt a fortune to resource in staffing and locos

We got a DM the other day with a fun request from a local family: Could we find this nice BART train operator who always waved and beeped at this special little rider? And if we found him, could we deliver him a thank you card!?  So we got to work …

Doing a search I think from the livery it's ex Beaver of Leicester, looks like some have been used for rail replacement work since? No idea if it's this specific one tho. 🤷 (I like the "go trendy take the bendy" branding 😂)

Yeah over here services have gradually increased since the 1980s, & if BR hadn't already regularised it then there was a push to do that post privatisation. From their POV biggest cost is crew, 2nd biggest is train, if you're paying for those then as long as extra runs cover the fuel it's worth it.

Mmmm unconvinced they would take a HSL past Exeter, definately not beyond Plymouth. Running beyond the network is normal, and plenty of French cities aren't directly connected to the HSL. (Nantes might be a good example that's bigger than Plymouth...)

Martyn Read @gloriousnse.bsky.social · 26/10/2025
Yeah possibly, though going the other way only about 3 a day would go all the way to Penzance, and two of those would run half an hour apart for some bizarre reason, plus an extra once per year on St Pirans day. 🙃

For context, i'm down in Exeter and Barnstaple and Okehampton are both hourly, Exmouth half hourly, suspect if I was in France they would have bustituted Barnstaple and never reopened Oke... Though conversely Exeter would probably have at least a couple of tram lines so there's that! 🙃

Martyn Read @gloriousnse.bsky.social · 26/10/2025
If you're comparing France and England, then (very generally) most of England has at least an hourly train, in some bits of France you're talking there being just a handful of trains a day assuming services haven't just been replaced by a bus yet....

(Given the fairly simple wayside station built locally in recent years had to have a second means of escape put in from each platform, I doubt you can build that today even if you wanted!)

Depends what you mean, there's at least couple in Scotland with no public road access, but you can still enter and exit the station, does that count?

New this month: Exeter’s train stations are now your starting points for exploring the beautiful Green Circle walking route! More: news.exeter.gov.uk/new-project-...
A man with a gray beard, wearing glasses, a purple shirt, and a green lanyard, smiles while pointing at a public information board in Exeter. The sign highlights the "Hoopern Valley Walk," part of Exeter’s Green Circle, and includes a map and directional information for city transport. The background shows parked cars and a partly cloudy sky.

And the other is an Alkem models 41xxx series car built from their etched brass kit, a further Abrams as load, set up as the previous one. This will form one end of the eventual train so it's also got a dummy EOTD attached to the coupler. The 4 flats so far brought up the rear of a mixed freight.
