I've been working on recent Qur'an translations. A common feature here is the desire to defend Islam against attacks. What struck me today is that, contrary to what many (including Muslim translators) would intuitively assume, this did not start on September 11, 2001. It started on January 16, 1991.

This German Qur'an translation, allegedly by one Muhammad Abdallah (what a totally not AI-generated super-un-generic Muslim name!), is 100% identical to the result you get if you enter Marmaduke Pickthall's Qur'an translation into DeepL. Isn't this a weird coincidence? 😜

The caliph directed his followers to publish the Qur’an in these languages, believing it would captivate readers and spark their interest in Islam. In 1953, the Jamaat-i Ahmadiyya published their Dutch translation of the Qur’an, followed by the German translation in 1954.

Sher Ali’s translation played a pivotal role in the Jamaat-i Ahmadiyya’s emergence as a global publisher. Once the draft of the English translation was completed in the 1940s, the Jamaat-i Ahmadiyya consulted Berlitz in England to translate it into eight additional languages.
