What’s funnier (to us at least) is, if you see a row of little kids out from school or daycare, they’re all holding the rope and all wearing little hi-viz vests. Any potential safety gain, they embrace it. Thats not a North American mentallity.

My commute had a 3-4km stretch on a busy, twisty, narrow rural secondary highway. That stretch terrified me. I had really nice reflective Showers Pass jacket, but it was black, so the hi-viz over it helped. That was Ireland. Don’t get me started about how dark Sweden Is in December

Some of it is safety-ism. But, having lived and bike commuted in Dublin through the winter, it gets hella dark and gloomy. You want to be seen. I found a County Kildare road safety vest in the ditch one day. I took it as a sign, washed it up and still wear it, even in Canada, Nov-Mar.

We had a few of these in the town I grew up in. As kids, someone told us there were transformers or some utility in them. But as kids of the 80’s we were wary that perhaps there were larger government research labs beneath them, doing…experiments. We steered clear.

I got into baking when we lived in the EU. Irish butter, Odlums flour, beautiful, perfect scones. I use the same recipe and do the same things in Canada and I get things only suitable for practice shots against the garage door. Used to be worth smuggling Kerry Gold from the US...alas, no more.
