I realize it takes so much more strength to remain warm and kind than to be cold and unreachable. That’s the main thing age and experience has taught me, and in a way I’m glad I’m able to reach that point in some ways now.

It seems dramatic and childish now, maybe, but for the longest time I was very convinced the world had no kindness for me, so I would show it none in return. I’m glad that hasn’t remained true, even as I still struggle to navigate it even now.

It’s taken me decades to become a kinder, softer, more open person. It’s been such a long road to melt the permafrost I’ve had to cultivate to keep others from ever being able to hurt me. And the result is that sometimes I am able to be hurt again, but at least I have been able to love others.

And part of that was other kids growing up and maturing, but the rest felt so unfair. Why did I have to become so strong and cold and unbending in order to survive abuse and make it finally stop? It hardened me for so, so long. It made me tough to the point of detriment. Sometimes I still am.

Thankfully I eventually reached the point I was so fed up with being hated for being someone I wasn’t that I decided to just be fucking hated for being myself. And when I stopped caring is when the harassment finally stopped. When I was so tired and broken that I couldn’t give a shit anymore.

I grew so resentful. Why wouldn’t other kids just leave me alone? I did everything to be less ‘weird’ because liking to draw anime and wear goth clothes and being ‘smart’ was weirdo shit but I stopped doing it, made myself silent and small and yet it didn’t stop the harassment anyway.

Middle school was the worst time in my life and I vowed that starting at a new high school I would change everything about myself to be palatable. I joined a sports team, followed MTV and celebrity news, wore trendy clothes, dated someone, and hid all my real likes and interests. It didn’t work.

I sometimes think back on the miserable experiences I had in school while not knowing I was autistic and absolutely not understanding why I was bullied and disliked by the majority of other kids for years, no matter what I did or tried to change about myself. I really feel for kids like I was.

Feeling like being proactive and productive has been a struggle lately. Being sick for three weeks hasn’t helped. Honestly though I think I’m going to start deleting apps off my phone that waste passive time and try using it only for social or educational / creative / engaging things.

My first was an intellivision! I have lots of fond memories with that but I think the PS1 will always be the more memorable in the way it defined me as a gamer and really got me passionate about RPGs.
