Our study demonstrates that supraglacial glacial lakes in similar settings and with similar characteristics can produce floods with very different impacts because of the nature of water drainage.

Simon Cook 🏔❄🌊 @glaciocook.bsky.social · 23/07/2026
The two floods had v different impacts because they drained differently. The Nielangpu Glacier lake drained englacially, leading to a slower & less damaging flood. The Purepu Glacier lake drained more rapidly across the glacier surface, causing major damage to infrastructure & killing 18 people.

These glaciers had been pretty stable over the last few decades, and even growing slightly in some cases, but this most recent study indicates that summer heatwaves across the region have more than offset winter snowfalls, leading to a quadrupling of mass loss in the last few years 🥵

We found: ▶️ Bolivian glaciers shrank by ~9%, 2016-2022 ▶️ Glacial lakes grew in number & size as ice receded ▶️ 11 lakes are highly susceptible to generating a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) ▶️ Analysis of subglacial topography reveals that 55 lakes could emerge as glacier continue to recede (2/2)

🧊 The lag comes from the time taken for glacier retreat to form a lake, and also the destabilisation of surrounding valley walls due to glacier debuttressing and permafrost degradation (~70% of GLOFs are triggered by ice avalanches and landslides into lakes)

Simon Cook 🏔❄🌊 @glaciocook.bsky.social · 18/12/2025
📌We built upon & revised existing GLOF inventories worldwide, generating a list of >600 GLOFs between 1900 and 2020, which we analysed. 🌡️ We found that global GLOF frequency has increased markedly since the late 20th century, with a lagged response time to rising temperatures of ~5 to 20 years
